Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2007 album from the French/Canadian diva, a brilliant step forward for one of the most respected female vocalists of modern times. Features such songwriters and producers as John Shanks, Ben Moody (formerly of Evanescence), Linda Perry, and Ne-Yo. Features 14 new Celine classics including the first single 'Taking Chances'.

Taking Chances is not without its daring moments--we'll get to those--but the first order of business in any review of this much-hyped record, on which Celine Dion is said to have slunk away from her songbird instincts in favor of embracing her inner rock & roll wild child, should be fan reassurance. Therefore: fear not. Taking Chances has its share of poignant, pretty ballads (both "A Song for You" and "Right Next to the Right One" are goosebump-raisers) and love songs (the hopeful, heartfelt title track, which unfolds into an anthemic power ballad midway through, may be the best one). As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, Chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002's A New Day Has Come; nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance. And, as the subtle "My Love" deftly proves, any early-career instincts to over-sing have gone poof along with her '90s-era, sweet-natured-kook persona. Because it's a generous 16 songs long, it may even be possible to ignore the non-Celine-like moments on Taking Chances and just enjoy the more fan-faithful tracks. But that wouldn't be any fun, would it? There are songs here--"Can't Fight the Feelin'," "Fade Away," "That's Just the Woman In Me"--that will astound diehards and make fans of those who've dissed her for more than a decade. If you didn't think the diva behind Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" had it in her to screech from the bottom of her soul, a la Janis Joplin, flip to track 15 and guess again. --Tammy La Gorce

2.0 out of 5 stars Taking Chances with some bad songs and too many producers November 20, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Hear Celine sound like Kelly Clarkson!
Hear Celine channel the late Janis Joplin or is it Bonnie Raitt.
Hear Celine sing what sounds like an Irish Saloon song.

Celine's Voice is great with it's rock edge. Too many producers contributing some rather lame songs. There are probably 6 very good songs on this CD and you should run to download them. Don't buy the whole CD and reward some of this lame songwriting work with royalties.

Despite the rise in downloads we still see artists giving disk space to writers and producers that will not drive the total project. WHAT A SHAME!

Tickets went on sale Monday November 19th in South Florida for Celine's upcoming January 2009 concert dates. Well you can count me out for spending my money one year in advance to hear some of this dribble. I plan on taking that money and buy a ticket to the Las Vegas show before it closes. By the way it will be my 4th time to Vegas as well as many times to her other concerts.

Rock On Celine .....but the next time just "Say No" to those who want to make a buck by being on your CD. They all know it will sell millions and make some money even if their contribution is not a selected single from the CD.

Strong memorable songs make for a great CD.

See you all at the cut out bin for this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars So, so Celine November 21, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Taking Chances? Not really. This album is just the essence of what Celine has been doing in English for a long, long while. No that new, not that good, not that bad...just a remarkable but over produced voice. After hearing the album several times it seems that I still feel a little bit tired of her singing style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kind of Disappointed November 23, 2007
By Winnie
Format:Audio CD
I have LOVED Celine Dion since I was 8 years old. I am now 23 and I never thought I would be disappointed with anything she could do. I always thought that no matter how bad the song, Celine could take it and make me love it. That has always been true, until now. I was SOO excited waiting to get this CD, and I feel let down. I like a couple of her songs, but I believe the songwriters on this album are HORRIBLE! The songs are not good at all. I like Taking Chances, Alone, Eyes on Me, New Dawn, A Song For You and Fade Away. That's it. Out of 16 tracks. For some people that might not seem that bad considering that a lot of times when people buy albums, they'll only like around this amount of songs or even less. But I have NEVER disliked any song on any album from Celine and I never thought I would. But I do now. The producers were trying too hard to give her radio hits and moved her way too far past her comfort zone. Her comfort zone is not just ballads, because if you listen to her other albums, she does up-tempo songs with as much ease and perfection as her trademark ballads. I mean, they lost Celine!! If I heard most of those songs on the radio, I would not even know it was Celine which is not a positive to me because I can recognize her voice a mile away. Whomever she worked with did not do her justice at all and I am highly disappointed. Celine, I wish you would stay true to the quality of songs that you deserve to be singing. It's not about ballads vs. rock/pop, it's about keeping the quality of songs no matter the tempo. Please don't ever work with these songwriters again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Awful December 1, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Like many others on here, I'm a big fan, own all her albums, and have been to a couple of concerts. She's tried so hard to distance herself from the sound that made her successful on this album. The first single is weak and why cover 'Alone'? Ann Wilson OWNS that song and it's been done repeatedly on several reality shows (American Idol & Rock Star) over the years. No one can touch Heart's version. Lyrically, many of the songs on this CD are very simple and appear to have been written by children. Almost every single track from Falling into You and New Day was excellent - this is the worst Celine CD I've ever owned. I can only listen to 3 tracks on the album, and that's stretching it. I treat all my other Celine CDs like gold, this one has already been thrown under the car seat. LOL It's obvious that most people feel the same, her sales are not strong at all..and it's already falling in the charts - unlike most of her stellar CDs from the past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quirky change but still the same December 5, 2007
By Ben
Format:Audio CD
Celine Dion is without a doubt one of the best female singers alive. That being said, her latest effort is undeniably strong in vocal, but lacking in emotion and flair. The last two elements are what I love about Celine. Her magical voice can take you to amazing places and times. Somehow, I wonder, after all those years performing "A New Day" in Vegas has broken her. Something's missing from Celine here. There is a lack of a personal stamp or definition. It's unfortunate, because I do enjoy this collection, but I feel as if anyone could have recorded this set. Anyone. Celine usually takes a song and blows it up to soaring heights, but she misses more than she hits here. Below is my song-by-song review and overall opinion.

"Taking Chances" - Beautiful, slow-riser of a pop-ballad. This is actually Celine at her best. Breathless beginning to a rocking chorus and finishing with a bullseye ending. [A-]

"Alone" - Interesting take on the Heart classic. Not original, but still nice. [B]

"Eyes On Me" - I love this song. The sharp strings and the quick pace are at first jarring, but mesh once Celine emerges. [A-]

"My Love" - The classic ballad. Perfect. [A]

"Shadow of Love" - Simply. Amazing. Song. [A]

"Surprise Surprise" - Supreme power ballad. However, I dislike the end. [B+]

"This Time" - I can't help but think of Janet's similarly titled track (from janet.) that seems to be of a similar topic. Still, good vocals. [B]

"New Dawn" - I like the vocals. I like the chorus. I hate the lyrics. Wasn't this verse done on "A New Day Has Come" already? [B-]

"A Song For You" - Could've been so much better... [C]

"A World To Believe In" - Good vocal song, Celine owns it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really? You really like Celine Dion? Michael Bolton too? Kenny G?
Celine Dion is for people who know nothing about music. she has great range and technique, but is wholly lacking in that one element that makes pop music swing: soul.

I loved Celine's french album and expected the same quality of songs, as in that album. I was disappointed. Although the talent is there the songs were of mediocre quality.
