Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2007 album from the French/Canadian diva, a brilliant step forward for one of the most respected female vocalists of modern times. Features such songwriters and producers as John Shanks, Ben Moody (formerly of Evanescence), Linda Perry, and Ne-Yo. Features 14 new Celine classics including the first single 'Taking Chances'.

Amazon.com

Taking Chances is not without its daring moments--we'll get to those--but the first order of business in any review of this much-hyped record, on which Celine Dion is said to have slunk away from her songbird instincts in favor of embracing her inner rock & roll wild child, should be fan reassurance. Therefore: fear not. Taking Chances has its share of poignant, pretty ballads (both "A Song for You" and "Right Next to the Right One" are goosebump-raisers) and love songs (the hopeful, heartfelt title track, which unfolds into an anthemic power ballad midway through, may be the best one). As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, Chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002's A New Day Has Come; nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance. And, as the subtle "My Love" deftly proves, any early-career instincts to over-sing have gone poof along with her '90s-era, sweet-natured-kook persona. Because it's a generous 16 songs long, it may even be possible to ignore the non-Celine-like moments on Taking Chances and just enjoy the more fan-faithful tracks. But that wouldn't be any fun, would it? There are songs here--"Can't Fight the Feelin'," "Fade Away," "That's Just the Woman In Me"--that will astound diehards and make fans of those who've dissed her for more than a decade. If you didn't think the diva behind Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" had it in her to screech from the bottom of her soul, a la Janis Joplin, flip to track 15 and guess again. --Tammy La Gorce

Hear Celine sound like Kelly Clarkson!
Hear Celine channel the late Janis Joplin or is it Bonnie Raitt.
Hear Celine sing what sounds like an Irish Saloon song.

Celine's Voice is great with it's rock edge. Too many producers contributing some rather lame songs. There are probably 6 very good songs on this CD and you should run to download them. Don't buy the whole CD and reward some of this lame songwriting work with royalties.

Despite the rise in downloads we still see artists giving disk space to writers and producers that will not drive the total project. WHAT A SHAME!

Tickets went on sale Monday November 19th in South Florida for Celine's upcoming January 2009 concert dates. Well you can count me out for spending my money one year in advance to hear some of this dribble. I plan on taking that money and buy a ticket to the Las Vegas show before it closes. By the way it will be my 4th time to Vegas as well as many times to her other concerts.

Rock On Celine .....but the next time just "Say No" to those who want to make a buck by being on your CD. They all know it will sell millions and make some money even if their contribution is not a selected single from the CD.

Strong memorable songs make for a great CD.

See you all at the cut out bin for this one.

Taking Chances? Not really. This album is just the essence of what Celine has been doing in English for a long, long while. No that new, not that good, not that bad...just a remarkable but over produced voice. After hearing the album several times it seems that I still feel a little bit tired of her singing style.

I have LOVED Celine Dion since I was 8 years old. I am now 23 and I never thought I would be disappointed with anything she could do. I always thought that no matter how bad the song, Celine could take it and make me love it. That has always been true, until now. I was SOO excited waiting to get this CD, and I feel let down. I like a couple of her songs, but I believe the songwriters on this album are HORRIBLE! The songs are not good at all. I like Taking Chances, Alone, Eyes on Me, New Dawn, A Song For You and Fade Away. That's it. Out of 16 tracks. For some people that might not seem that bad considering that a lot of times when people buy albums, they'll only like around this amount of songs or even less. But I have NEVER disliked any song on any album from Celine and I never thought I would. But I do now. The producers were trying too hard to give her radio hits and moved her way too far past her comfort zone. Her comfort zone is not just ballads, because if you listen to her other albums, she does up-tempo songs with as much ease and perfection as her trademark ballads. I mean, they lost Celine!! If I heard most of those songs on the radio, I would not even know it was Celine which is not a positive to me because I can recognize her voice a mile away. Whomever she worked with did not do her justice at all and I am highly disappointed. Celine, I wish you would stay true to the quality of songs that you deserve to be singing. It's not about ballads vs. rock/pop, it's about keeping the quality of songs no matter the tempo. Please don't ever work with these songwriters again.

Let me preface by saying - I own a lot of Celine Dion CDs! I hated this album. From the first song, where it just seems like she is screaming through it, through the last song. There is not even a hint of ballard that comes close to what I've always enjoyed about her interpretations. So, I would caution folks to listen to the album at your local Best Buy or Amazon before buying - I don't think it's worth the money and my copy, at least, is going off to ebay.

This CD was much anticipated for me because it has taken Celine a few years to produce one in English. When I listened to it, I was not very impressed. If this was her taking chances, she better not. Some of the songs on the CD are good and are ones I hit "repeat" on, but over half are really bad. "Eyes on Me" is absolutely horrible along with "New Dawn" and "A Song for You." "Skies of L.A." is bad too. I'm not sure what she was thinking. The lyrics don't even make sense. I miss the old Celine. Bring back music from the album "One Heart" or "A New Day Has Come." Those are songs that have orginality and kick. Honestly, if you are reading this review, I would not recommend this CD. I've been a fan for a long time, and I'm disappointed.

I was really hoping for an improvement from Celine Dion's last studio 2003 album One Heart (which was certaintly not terrible) but I felt she was capable of putting out more winners like Falling Into You, A New Day Has Come, or Let's Talk About Love. However, the opposite is true, this is a HUGE decline in material and song selection on most of the album. You wonder how a superstar like celine Dion can do so well at her peak and put out such amazing albums but a decade later seems to struggle to even find half a dozen good songs to release? I guess things just run their course and that's about the size of it. Celine Dion's strength has always been singing amazing ballads of beautifully written songs. Even though she would mix in some rockers (not all good), the shining moments of those albums made it more than worth while to purchase and listen endless times. It's like on Taking Chances, she has chosen a number of songwriters to write songs that are suppose to be memorable, but instead most of them are instantly forgetable and boring. It's the lack of overall good material that kills this project. With GREAT songs, she could have made the best album of her career (and still could). But I am starting to doubt she will ever choose or find such songs to ever release again. And every poor selling album from this point on will make a comeback even harder to obtain and by the time she does make another good album, nobody but die hard fans will care. She will be long absent from the charts or hit making and instead will be moving on to play her OLD music and her big hits at much smaller venues. And yes there are some standout and interesting songs on this LONG set, like "Eyes On Me", "A World To Believe In", "Right Next To The Right One", "Fade Away", Skies Of LA, The Reason I Go On.Read more ›

I bought "Taking Chances" on itunes and I liked every song. I dont care if she doesnt have another #1 hit. Shes too good for most of mainstream music now anyways. Screw the negative reviews. Celine Dion rocks!
