Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Taking Chances is not without its daring moments--we'll get to those--but the first order of business in any review of this much-hyped record, on which Celine Dion is said to have slunk away from her songbird instincts in favor of embracing her inner rock & roll wild child, should be fan reassurance. Therefore: fear not. Taking Chances has its share of poignant, pretty ballads (both "A Song for You" and "Right Next to the Right One" are goosebump-raisers) and love songs (the hopeful, heartfelt title track, which unfolds into an anthemic power ballad midway through, may be the best one). As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, Chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002's A New Day Has Come; nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance. And, as the subtle "My Love" deftly proves, any early-career instincts to over-sing have gone poof along with her '90s-era, sweet-natured-kook persona. Because it's a generous 16 songs long, it may even be possible to ignore the non-Celine-like moments on Taking Chances and just enjoy the more fan-faithful tracks. But that wouldn't be any fun, would it? There are songs here--"Can't Fight the Feelin'," "Fade Away," "That's Just the Woman In Me"--that will astound diehards and make fans of those who've dissed her for more than a decade. If you didn't think the diva behind Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" had it in her to screech from the bottom of her soul, a la Janis Joplin, flip to track 15 and guess again. --Tammy La Gorce

Unfortunately they do not tell you that the DVD is only a preview of Live in Las Vegas which I bought at the same time!!! If I knew that I would not have bought this CD! I was looking for DVD's not a CD - beware!

2.0 out of 5 stars maybe Celine's worst, December 21, 2007
This review is from: Taking Chances (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
With the exception of the "Alone" cut, this CD will make a nice coaster. And I am a huge Celine fan, seeing her in Vegas twice. This was a big disappointment. Sure, if you want a hip, edgier Celine, this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking Chances and Succeeding..., November 12, 2007
This review is from: Taking Chances (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
Ah, Celine Dion. All of us know her and most of us love her, even if we tend to buy her CDs in sunglasses and disguise them in Bob Dylan jewel cases. However, her long-awaited new English album "Taking Chances" is a startlingly impressive, aptly-titled departure from her typical adult contemporary sound. Brimming with weighty themes and fierce versatility, it should win her newfound respect.

Throughout its 16 tracks she runs the gamut of emotions as skillfully as always, but the sappy love ballads take a backseat to darker subject matter and solid rock sounds, courtesy of fine production work from the likes of John Shanks and ex-Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. Singing with wild abandon, slow-burning passion and all places between, she sinks her teeth into themes of unrequited love ("Shadow of Love", the Ne-Yo penned "I Got Nothin' Left"), escaping spousal abuse ("This Time"), and grey day melancholy ("Skies of LA"). The soaring, graceful title-track mirrors some of her best known hits but still befits its title.

Refreshing is the fact that she is no longer over-sings needlessly. A cover of Tim Christensen's slinky "Right Next to the Right One" as well as the sexy, Middle Eastern flavored "Eyes On Me" both prove this, as does the offbeat, guttural blues-rocker "That's Just the Woman In Me." The insecure attachment of Linda Perry's "My Love" and a cover of Heart's desperate, clawing "Alone" are absolutely spine-tingling and demand attention, while "Fade Away" sounds as tortured as it does resilient amid its angst-ridden guitar riffs as her vocals surge high enough to scale Everest.

A few songs in the middle of the album are unremarkable, but with such a thick track list that is relative - this release is a definite winner. Dion is a singer in every sense of the word, infecting each song with grace, power and agility, and she indeed takes chances and succeeds which is sure to win her new admirers and keep the already initiated more than sated.

This special CD/DVD version features live performances from her "A New Day..." Vegas showcase, and there is also a special gift pack with the CD, DVD and a sample of Dion's latest fragrance - she really needs to stop with the perfume.
