Book Description

February 16, 2001
One of five children of Czech immigrants, George Jelinek was educated at Scotch College in Perth, before studying medicine at the University of Western Australia. While at school, his mother developed multiple sclerosis, and by the time he had qualified in medicine she was wheelchair bound. A few years later she took her own life, such was her suffering. George Jelinek speciallsed in Emergency Medicine, winning the prize in the first specialist examinations in that field in Australasia in 1986. A stellar career followed: President of the Australasian Society for Emergency Medicine, Editor of Emergency Medicine, then, in 1996, inaugural Professor in Emergency Medicine in Australasia. But at the age of 45, two years into that job, he too was diagnosed with MS. Professor Jelinek accepted the disease as a challenge, searching the medical literature and modifying his own life according to the findings: support for new, disease-modifying drugs, and sound evidence that dietary modifications and sunlight may help in controlling MS. More than a medical challenge, the disease has also led Professor Jelinek to re-assess his life, relationships and spirituality. The insights he gained, together with the dietary and lifestyle changes he prescribes, will be of benefit to thousands of people with MS and many other chronic conditions.

More About the Author

George Jelinek lives in Victoria in Australia, with Professorial appointments at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. George has had a stellar career in Emergency Medicine; he won the Prize in the first Specialist Examinations in 1986, is a past President of the Australasian Society for Emergency Medicine and Vice-President of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). He was the first Professor of Emergency Medicine in Australasia and Founding Editor of the journal Emergency Medicine Australasia, a major international journal he has edited for 20 years. He was awarded the ACEM Medal in 2003, and was a WA Finalist for 2008 Australian of the Year recognising his work in emergency medicine and multiple sclerosis.

George has written and edited several major textbooks in Emergency Medicine, but since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, has devoted considerable time to analysing and summarising the vast medical literature on this disease. His major new work, 'Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis: An Evidence-based Guide to Recovery', published by Allen and Unwin, is a compelling evidence-based summary of the literature that provides realistic hope that it is possible to be well after a diagnosis of MS. The book was released on 1st February 2010 in Australia and New Zealand and later in 2010 in the rest of the world.

Dr. Jelinik presents a comprehensive summary of conventional and alternative treatment to MS. Excellent resource explaining benefits of diet, positive attitude, modern medicine, etc. Overall, the best MS book I have read to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars a life saver!, April 19, 2007

This book gave me hope that I could stop being a victim to MS. He supports his research well, writes clearly and convincingly. The only trouble is I don't know whether my ms was going to be fairly benign anyway or it has become so by following his recommendations. Either way -I don't care! He has given me the facts and optimism for the future. I think this book should be read by everyone who has the disease or has a family member with it. I haven't read anything nearly as useful as this book. I fully recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars an inspiring incredible book that gives much hope, March 18, 2009

This book is breathtaking. Multiple Sclerosis hits people between 20-40 years of age (usually) and women at 3 times the rate of men. The prevailing view is it's bad news, progressive, and drugs have limited success - a "go make yourself comfortable" medical view. Professor Jelinek of Western Australia however, a medical specialist and teacher, argues against such limited wisdom. George has MS - and his mother suicided from MS. His world fell apart when he was diagnosed. He took time off, read all 19,000 medical articles published at the time, and found an article in one of the world's top medical journals so stunning, simple and crucial, that he drilled down, developed and brought the research up to date - and (altruistically and honouring his mother) produced a readable yet at the same time erudite book showing lifestyle changes, in particular diet and sufficient vitamin D, have profound effects on the course of the disease. It is, in my opinion, a superb book to be read by anyone with MS.
