5.0 out of 5 stars A great survey and how-to for musicians looking to build an online presence, September 21, 2011
This review is from: Taking the Crowd to the Cloud - Social Media for the Music Industry (Kindle Edition)
I picked up a copy of this book after seeing the author speak at a songwriters conference this Summer. In hearing what she had to say, I was impressed with her confidence in the ability of the indie artist to create their own promotional machine (and subsequent success) through the online resources available to them today. In reading the book, I was hoping to learn more about this approach and how to apply it to my own situation, and I was not disappointed.

I'd recommend this book to any musician (and frankly any other digital content distributer) looking to build an online presence or improve the quality of their existing online presence. It does an excellent job of surveying the online promotional tools available to artists, as well as, providing a step-by-step how-to on utilizing those tools to form an online ecosystem around their product.

On the former point, I was impressed by the breadth of the coverage within this book and the novelty of the author's federated approach to connecting with and delivering value (which Richards interestingly notes is, more often than not, the connection itself) to fans and fellow artists. The book does a great job of highlighting the range of grass roots online tools at ones disposal (i.e. it's not all about facebook) and providing real-world examples to back up their utility. Clearly, there are a lot of artists out there doing interesting things, with interesting models, utilizing tools both old and new, and the book provides a path toward learning from these first movers.

Per the step-by-step approach to the book, the author starts from the premise that artists, now more than ever, need to own their own success (read promotion). Acknowledging the realities of the music industry today (and yesterday for that matter), Richards emphasizes that artists must work to both build their brand and create an online ecosystem that enables potential fans to connect with them in accordance with that brand. And she's right. But she doesn't just leave you with that advice. Through the step-by-step approach of the book, she actually gives you a blue print on how to build that connection.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book - Excellent How to Guide, November 11, 2011
This review is from: Taking the Crowd to the Cloud - Social Media for the Music Industry (Kindle Edition)
I found this to be an excellent guide on the music industry and a great beginner's guide for anyone looking to build a presence in social media. It was written in plain English, NOT technospeak - a huge relief. Kelli Richards has created a simple, easy-to-implement plan that anyone can follow. While some of the very beginner steps may be obvious, the subtle nuances (like skip the Fan Page on Facebook and go for a group) make this eBook a rockin' investment.
