5.0 out of 5 stars Fragmented and illuminating, September 23, 2009
This review is from: Taking Pictures (Hardcover)
First, this volume of Enright shorts is, so far as I can gather, the same book marketed in America as,'Yesterday's Weather'. Who knows what drives such decisions, but,'Weather' is a far stronger and convincing story than,'Pictures'. Amazon reviewers have quite varied responses to,'Weather' and I suspect this is partly due to the uneveness of the stories, some being not less realised, but more fragmenetary glimpses into the consciousness of the narrator or subject, who is always a woman. This presents no obstacle for me. I welcome, as with the superb Alice Munro, this access into feminine consciousness. And if that, as with Enright, is so much to do with the sexual dynamism, the bemused entanglement with men, then so much the better. Enright has a gift for unleashing the most unpredictable turns of phrase, keeping this reader on the edge of the seat.'Honey', 'Shaft', 'Bad sex weekend','Switzerland'; there are any number of glimpses that are superbly paced and evocative of contemporary angst. 'What are You Like', is a full length Enright novel which has much the same stylistic construction , and for this reader, was a more demanding effort on my concentration.
