Book Description

Elli Fisher has never thought she was good enough. Let it be her job, her weight, her love life; nothing. She has walked through life for the past six years in a daze, never thinking that life could be good again after the abuse she endured from her ex-boyfriend. She is lonely, sad, and depressed, that is until she meets Shea Adler. After doing a promotional shoot for the NHL team, the Nashville Assassins, she meets the hunky hockey player who shoots a puck, shattering her world.

Shea Adler is tired of the life he was living outside of the rink. The girls, the money blowing, the drinking, everything had to stop and it all did when he met Eleanor Fisher. He had never met anyone like her. She is feisty, witty, shy, and simply gorgeous. When he laid eyes on her, it was as if he was taking the hardest hit of his life into the boards, and he had to have her.
Elli is a little skeptical of Shea, but he knows that they are meant to be together, and he needs her in his life.

But Elli just doesn't understand what Shea could see in her. She is overweight, loud, and not even that pretty, so why would someone so gorgeous and so amazing want to be with her? It seems that no matter how hard she tries to shake Shea off, he isn't going anywhere, and for the first time, Elli doesn't feel alone.
But can Elli throw her insecurities out the window and love Shea with everything inside of her? Or will she let a past relationship, and her family ruin any chance of her being happy?

Would Elli miss her shot at love?

Review

This is the ultimate *Gordie Howe hat trick* book for any hockey lover. There is fighting and lots of assists and of course it ends with a score. Taking Shots is really the whole package. You get romance, humor, steamy sex, drama, and then it all wraps up with a great conclusion. I am amazed that this is Toni's first book. She has come out in a huge way. I can't wait to read more from her. Don't hesitate for a moment to grab this book. Every girl deserves to have her own Shea Adler - Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Apart of Shea and Elli's life, as though you were living every moment with them. That couldn't be more accurate. I do believe that is a great testament of the caliber of writing. Especially by a first time published writer, and what a first book! Toni really started out of the gates with a bang! - Book Junkie

I really truly LOVED the story! Yes, there were quite a few editing mistakes, but the author has since had them corrected. If you have an unedited copy, please overlook the mistakes because you will find a great love story!- The Autumn Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story! Terrible editing!!! October 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed the story line and couldn't wait to see how the relationship played out. At times, I had tears in my eyes at the emotional scenes between Elli and Shea. Who could have thought a man could be so sensitive! The only reason that I couldn't give this book the maximum stars was because of the non-editing! There were so many grammar errors that at times made me stop to think what the author was trying to say. Believe me, it was bad!

1.0 out of 5 stars Self-Published Books: A Two-Sided Coin June 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded this because it came up as a recommendation for me, it had a good number of reviews (which I should have admittedly read more of), and I'm a fan of both Rachel Gibson's and Deirdre Martin's hockey series. However, it was very clear after only one chapter that despite what might be a "cute" story (according to reviews - I could never get that far in to it), this was a very poorly written telling of that story.

Yes, there were editing problems, but my dissatisfaction stems more from things such as simplistic sentence/paragraph construction and awkward dialogue. In just the four chapters I could manage to get through, the number of paragraphs that included multiple sentences in a row that started with the word "He" or "She" in reference to a character really grated on my nerves. They read like check lists, not narratives. If you are writing a story, you should closely examine the sentence and paragraph construction of books you admire. You can't just string a bunch of sentences together that basically say (in this precise format): "She took this action. She took another action. She took another action," and pat yourself on the back for having put together a decent paragraph.

And then there was the strained dialogue that sounded less like two people of reasonable intelligence talking to each other, and more like too moronic teenagers talking outside of their lockers in a high school corridor. It's hard to identify with chemistry between two characters when you are questioning their intelligence in the first place.

I know this is particularly harsh, but the fact is, it's a lesson for the consumer. You really need to investigate a book when you download, since it's now so easy to just buy a book without thinking much of it beforehand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way Too Long January 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In it's current incarnation, Taking Shots is a good rough draft for a sports romance. H is a gifted professional hockey player who comes from a stable family and is actually a really nice guy. h is a poor little rich girl who has issues with her family and her body image. That notwithstanding, she is supporting herself as a professional photographer and is doing well. How she works through her issues and is finally able to accept her HEA with H could have been a really good book.

One of my smain gripe is the author's writing style. The whole book sounds like it was written by an eighth grader -- full of "he saids" and "she saids" and for a change of pace "she gushed". Thanks to the Kindle word search, I found out that that phrase was used sixty-seven times! Enough! If all else fails, use a Thesaurus to find some alternate words.

The author also gets bogged down in the minutia of the characters' lives. h gets up in the morning, she showers, she shampoos her hair, she rinses her hair, she gets out of the shower and wraps herself in a towel, she combs her hair, she puts on her makeup, her lip gloss, and her mascara, she curls her hair... By the time I got to 20% of the book, I was looking at the progress bar on my Kindle to see how much more there was to read.

There are also two scenes where the heroine vomits and one where the hero vomits. How this is supposed to be romantic? I don't understand, but that's just me.

From reading other reviews, it seems that the original version of Taking Shots was full of grammatical errors. The author has a disclaimer on the book's Amazon page which says that it has been edited. If this is true, it wasn't edited well enough. It's still riddled with grammatical errors, spelling errors, weird word usage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep writing but get a new editor! November 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I agree with other readers who've given reviews of this book. The story is great! Shae and Elli are wonderful characters and the dialogue and storyline unfold beautifully. However, the editing is HORRIBLE. Some of the editing mistakes are funny - (like how every "orgasm" is spelled "organism", and "haunches" is always spelled "hunches") but there are some wonderfully poignant and touching scenes that are less effective because of all the spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

Please, please, please, don't stop writing Ms. Aleo! Your stories are wonderful! In particular, we would love to have more Assassins stories. But please, please, please, get a different editor!

1.0 out of 5 stars I hated the h October 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I am guilty of buying a book based on reviews and can not understand why this book got such a high rating.Elli was the worst! She does not deserve Shea at all.The trust issues along with constant whine over her weight drove me up the wall.Shea had to constanly prove himself to her all time when he NEVER did anything wrong.I wish this read was on her friend Harper because she was what I looked for in a h.

More About the Author

My name is Toni Aleo!
I am a wife, mother, and hopeless romantic.
I have been told I have anger issues, but I think it's cause of my intense love for hockey!
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena's glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn't pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son's hockey games, my daughters dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, and reading the latest romance novel.
I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, and did I mention I love hockey?
I am currently working on Empty Net, and I hope to have it out by November!
I hope to hear from you on here, my Facebook, or my twitter! Thank you so much!
