Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-- A compilation of writings published about Larry McMurtry from the early 60s until early 1989. Such diverse writers as Pauline Kael, Larry L. King, and Donald Barthelme offer 41 reviews of and essays on his fiction and films. Other contributing editors introduce criticisms and insights into McMurtry's work. The extensive bibliography offers 500 writings in a broad range of publications, all designed ``to illuminate the author's evolving career.'' An excellent resource for those researching contemporary authors. --Anne Paget, Episcopal High School, Bellaire, TX

4.0 out of 5 stars The only work of its kind for McMurtry scholars, January 7, 2004
By
Tim V Fields (Austin, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taking Stock: A Larry McMurtry Casebook (Southwest Life and Letters) (Hardcover)
A fantastic collection of essays organized by subject. This is the only work of which I'm aware that even attempts to deal with a large chunk of LMM's career.

The only detractions are that the quality of writing in the essays varies greatly, and that most of the scholars represented are regionalists at best.

It seems that McMurtry may be right that it is impossible to write essays about Texas that appeal to any but Texas intellictuals, of whom there are few.
