Powerful,
By Paul Manos (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews

This is David Campbell's second solo album and it's a powerful emotional ride. His voice has an exposed edge to it, whether in a ballad like "Never Really Mine To Lose" or in the fast-driving anthem "Taking The Wheel". The range of material has a touch of a singer in a hurry to sing everything at once but the intensity of his interpretations is never in doubt. He converts the prayer-like nature of John Bucchino's "Grateful" into an affirmation of strength in adversity and he gives Wildhorn/Knighton's "Storybook" a whirlwind momentum, evocative of the runaway emotion of young love. I've been fortunate to see Campbell in 2 stage productions and in 3 different cabaret performances; his voice has travelled even further in strength and polish since this album (listen to his show-stopping rendition of "I'm Martin Guerre" in the 1998 release of "Hey Mr Producer! The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh"). I'm looking forward to his next solo album.

Voice from Heaven,

If you have not seen David Campbell in concert or in person, you have missed a truly remarkable tallent. I was fortunate to see his live performance in Houston with about 100 other people! Almost as if it was a personal show. This is one guy to keep your eye on. Someday I will be able to say, "I saw him before he got BIG."

Great voice, but Yesterday is Now is better!,
By Jentastic (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taking the Wheel (Audio CD)
I had David's Yesterday is Now album for a while before getting this one, and I loved it. Taking the Wheel is a great recording as well, but I much prefer the other CD. David's voice is, as usual, amazing, but there is just something lacking in the choice of songs. While some tracks are particularly memorable (the title song is my favorites), others seem to just be there. It is a wonderful CD overall though - I would recommend it, but if you're familiar with Yesterday is Now, be prepared for a little disappointment.

Taking the Wheel and headed for stardom,

If you've never seen David Campbell in person, this CD will give you a hint of the beautiful singer and talented entertainer he is. He puts a fine spin on the standards, like ''The Nearness of You'' and ''Not a Day Goes By.'' But David shines most when he tackles contemporary pop songwriters. The energy he expends on John Bucchino's ''Taking the Wheel'' could power a nuclear plant. And he gives a haunting and heartfelt reading of Tom Andersen's ''Yard Sale.'' By the way, if you love the song ''Yard Sale,'' also check out Andersen's own mesmerizing rendition on his CD, ''The Journey.'' Like this album, it's a winner!

Incredible voice,

David Cambell has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard. He can sing just about anything. This albums highlights are Not a Day Goes By, Storybook, and Taking the Wheel. His voice is so clear and beautiful. His version of Bridge Over Trouble Waters is gorgeous. He is by far the best male vocalist around.

Arguably the finest 90's CD by a male theater vet,

Words cannot express how talented this young man is; he may be the most purely confident singer since the young Barbra Streisand. When his voice opensup and truly soars--the final reprise of "It Will Always Be You" and "You Were Never Mine to Lose"-it's like watching Superman take flight; the effortless grace is breathtaking. The album is a nigh-perfect blend of traditional ballads and showtunes with some light pop alternating; Campbell does push a bit on the traditional numbers, trying to put his own "stamp" on them, but this is a forgivable sin. (Can we please, however, once and for all declare "Bridge Over Troubled Water" Art Garfunkel's exclusive property and retire it?) When you consider Campbell's youth and enthusiasm, and the fact that this is only the beginning of a very long career, you may feel as if you're witnessing the next Sinatra in the making. Yes, folks, he's THAT good.

Grateful for the pleasure,

David Campbell is one of the best talents Australia has unleashed on the world. Those of us lucky enough to have seen him act in his early career knew there was an exceptional talent in the making--when we heard him sing--WOW! "Taking the wheel" is a much more contemporary CD than the first, the addition of pure adult pop like Don Walker's "It will always be you" has added an extra bow to this remarkable singer's repetoire(any one has seen him live recently will know a bit of rock is now thrown in as well)and his versions of "yard sale" and "bridge over troubled water" are outstanding. If only the full story to "Grateful" could be included on the album notes, as its also a wonderful song & story. When one remembers that this guy is only in his mid-twenties, all we can say is that he will be with us for a long time, and hope that he won't be lost to Australia completely. I look forward to the third album in the not too distant future.

I LOVE this album! David has a great voice and these songs are very moving. He really does an excellent job on STORYBOOK - making it a tour de force performce (Which is great because it's a throw away song from a mediocre show)You need to buy both of his Albums if you are a fan of great vocalists! I have had the great fortune to see David in person and these albums are almost as good as live. I cannot wait for him to come out with another album or to see him live again.
