Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Gershwin, an immunologist, and Klingelhofer, his coauthor on Living Allergy Free, define what allergies are and are not, discuss environmental triggers, and outline diagnoses and treatments. With tables and flow charts, they offer well-organized, comprehensive coverage on asthma, hay fever, eczema, food allergies, hives, itchy eyes, and other allergic conditions that affect one in six children. From Booklist

Gershwin and Klingelhofer, authors of a previous book about asthma, broaden their scope in this direct, practical investigation. Besides asthma, they cover allergy and allergy-related conditions, ranging from colic to eczema and from itchy eyes to earaches. They explain symptoms, diagnoses, triggers, and treatments (at home and by the doctor), and they forthrightly discuss medications and therapies that are not recommended for children. They offer suggestions on managing a child's condition on a daily basis--at home, at school, and while traveling--and they advise parents on how to negotiate the managed-care health system. Although an index is not included, an extensive table of contents, featuring very descriptive headings, makes access fairly easy. Stephanie Zvirin --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent book, February 18, 2009
It is a decent book. Not light reading though. I did like the discussion about the various vaccines and when to definitely stay away from certain ones. This is not something I have found in other books on childhood allergies. If I have a criticism of the book, it is only that they did not address vaccines as being a cause of food allergies.
