Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

You know Easter is near, but "you're not always sure when it is coming even though you go to Sunday school." In fact, "it is only when Good Friday comes, and you have hot cross buns for tea, that you know for certain Easter will be the day after tomorrow." A little girl prepares for Easter by asking the chickens to lay her plenty of Easter eggs and dreaming "the loveliest dreams" of a wee fawn that makes her light as thistledown and takes her on a journey past shiny-coated rabbits, lambs frolicking among buttercups, and stardusted daffodils.

Beloved artist Tasha Tudor, creator of the Caldecott Honor book 1 Is One and more than 90 other picture books, looks through the eyes of a child at a favorite springtime holiday. With her trademark delicate watercolors and honey-sweet text, Tudor revisits her childhood memories and dreams of Easter. This 1941 classic pays tribute to the celebration of renewal while transporting readers to a gentle, joyful era. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Tasha Tudor's 1941 A Tale for Easter is handsomely reissued in a seven-inch-square format. Sentimental yet child-friendly, the book uses a second-person narration to evoke the pleasures of Easter as experienced in a long-ago rural idyll. "On Saturday you go and ask the chickens to lay you plenty of Easter eggs," writes Tudor; a watercolor decoration of a plump hen on its nest faces a page showing an angelic girl in bonnet, frock, apron and pantaloons slightly bent over in conversation with three chickens. The girl dreams of a "wee fawn," "rabbits smoothing their sleek coats" and lambs cavorting among buttercups. ( Feb.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Classic Treasure March 17, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Tasha Tudor is classic. I am so thrilled to have purchased this book for my "bookworm" daughter - I purchased this charming book through Tasha's own web page and had it signed by Tasha...however it cost me LOTS more than what the price is listed here - this adorable Easter tale which is beautifully illustrated is one to add to your child's library....The Easter Bunny will be leaving it on Easter for my little girl...and surely it will be a special added treasure to her collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated Springtime book April 8, 2002
Format:Hardcover
My daughters received this book for Easter and it is definitely MY favorite Easter book - it just took my breath away. Incredibly sweet and old-fashioned; no chocolate or hype. Just the essentials of this lovely Springtime holiday - new dresses, adorable baby animals, gentle little children and some colored eggs. I am enchanted and thrilled to have found Tasha Tudor. You will love her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Easter Basket Addition July 16, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is just so beautiful and charming, that I had to have it for my daughter's first Easter basket. It makes the perfect "special occasion" Easter book, and is a great gift, especially with a message inscribed inside. It includes Tudor's charming drawings of a time gone by, and sweet text in the voice of a little girl, who tells the reader how she knows it is time for Easter. This book also transforms a plain Easter basket from the Easter bunny into such a pretty, special treat for a little girl on Easter morning!
