Book Description

September 16, 2002 4 and upP and upPotter
To celebrate Peter's birthday, Frederick Warne is publishing new editions of all 23 of Potter's original tales, which take the very first printings of Potter's works as their guide. The aim of these editions is to be as close as possible to Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from modern printing and design techniques.

The colors and details of the watercolors in the volumes are reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. Most notably, The Tale of Peter Rabbit restores six of Potter's original illustrations. Four were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers, and two have never been used before. Of course, Beatrix Potter created many memorable children's characters, including Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck and Jeremy Fisher. But whatever the tale, both children and adults alike can be delighted by the artistry in Potter's illustrations, while they also enjoy a very good read. Because they have always been completely true to a child's experience, Potter's 23 books continue to endure.

Once upon a time there was an old pig called Aunt Pettitoes. She had eight of a family: four little girl pigs, called Cross-patch, Suck-suck, Yock-yock and Spot; and four little boy pigs, called Alexander, Pigling Bland, Chin-chin and Stumpy. Stumpy had had an accident to his tail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended to all Beatrix Potter fans!, June 25, 2006
This review is from: The Tale of Pigling Bland (Potter) (Hardcover)
Poor old Aunt Pettitoes cannot afford to feed all eight of her piglet offspring, and so she sends seven of them out into the world. Pigling Bland is going to market, to find a job with a farmer when he gets lost and meets a strange old man. Keeping his wits about him, Pigling Bland succeeds in escaping from the old man, along with the beautiful young Pig-wig.

This cute little book was written and illustrated by the great Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) in 1913. The story itself is somewhat confusing as the author did not make clear what was going on with licenses and county boundaries, and what ultimately happened to Pigling Bland and Pig-wig. But, remembering that Ms. Potter was trying to use familiar animals to tell stories to the young children of her time, you can see what the ultimate idea of the story was - keeping your head, and navigating through a dangerous world

Overall, I would say that this is not one of Ms. Potter's best works, but it is still an entertaining and silly little story. I recommend this book to all Beatrix Potter fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good sense and peppermints, November 27, 2003

"'Bacon and eggs, bacon and eggs!' clucked a hen on a perch." Pigling Bland faces a wicked, dangerous world, but good sense, resourcefulness and peppermints... No, I won't spoil a classic 1913 Beatrix Potter story for you. To be read out loud in a quiet, old-fashioned voice by the fireside on a winter's evening, savouring the sonorous words and inimitable watercolour illustrations. There's even some love interest. Ideal for the 4-8 age group and older.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, rambling story, December 31, 2004
By
Leggo Ami (Richmond, VA USA) - See all my reviews
Pigling Bland isn't a very good story. It's time to admit that. The tale just sort of stops without finishing up as characters wander off in the final pages. Makes little sense and I can't imagine what could be learned from it. Low entertainment value, too.
