4.0 out of 5 stars A hard to find gem
I am so glad Tale of the Tape has finally been re-relased. I have been searching for this CD for so long. (Of course, it is called "Tale of the Tape" since it originally came out in the pre-CD era) I used to have it on cassette tape in high school, until it completely wore out a few years ago. Since then it has been impossible to find. A true Billy Squier...

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible in terms of any style of rock music
This CD is the worst rock album I have ever purchased. I own some 500-600 albums, of rock alone, ranging from 1950s-1990s (90's were when I began to start hating rock music). As a musician, I cannot appreciate this garbage for any reason.

I have a 5 CD changer in my car and I put this in there when I wanted to listen to the album for the first time...

(Of course, it is called "Tale of the Tape" since it originally came out in the pre-CD era) I used to have it on cassette tape in high school, until it completely wore out a few years ago. Since then it has been impossible to find. A true Billy Squier fan's gem of a find. Classic songs that will take you back to the 80's. Who's Your Boyfriend, Like I'm Lovin' You and Callie Oh, all excellent songs. Great guitar, great voice, great music. I think this is his best work ever and shows he is capable of much more than just "Stroke." True Squier fans and 80's reminiscents will both love this CD!

I misplaced my old vinyl of Tale of the Tape and was glad to get the CD version. It sounds even better than "back in the day". Even though it's been a number of years, I still remember all the words to all the songs. Fantastic!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A true gem, August 8, 2008

The Tale of the Tape offers a rare glimpse into the early, post-Piper years of Billy Squier. In my opinion, Squier is a highly underrated, straightforward rocker. His unique vocals perfectly compliment a stripped-down accompaniment of raw guitars and thundering drums. This CD contains a lot of little-known, yet catchy tunes. Not really a bad song on here. Standing out particularly is the anthemic "The Big Beat" and the girlfriend-gone-astray "Who's Your Boyfriend". If you like simple, gritty hard rock, then I'd highly recommend this.

This release was Mr. Squier's first solo effort following Piper. What a fantastic beginning. I recall listening to the vinyl LP I had and how mesmerized I was by the quality of his music. So glad to now own the CD. Great music to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Squier rocks!!!!, May 7, 2009

This 1980 release really set the stage of what was to follow with the following year's "Don't Say No" album. With "Tale", Billy effectively showcased his expertise in songwriting and masterful lyrics. Heavy and rhythmic in spots while soft and mellow in others. A must-have for any Squier fans.

THIS ALBUM IS A N EXCELLENT SQUIER PRE-FAME MASTERPIECE. THE MUSIC IS RAW AND HAS A LOT OF NON COMMERCIAL HEART. I RECOMMEND THIS MUSIC TO THE SQUIER FAN WHO ENJOYED THE "DONT SAY NO" ALBUM.

4.0 out of 5 stars Billy's first is classic Squier, August 18, 2008

Tape of the tape is much like Don't Say No
but not as rocking. It has rocking moments.
The Big Beat, Rich Kid and You should be
high love. Songs like Calley oh and Who's
your boyfriend are great catchy pop tunes.
Squier first solo album should've had more
hits but he did great on all his albums even
without the hits that avoided him after MTV
killed it with the Rock me tonight video.
The song was and is still great! MTV ruined
many a carrer but Squier still has die hard fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tale of the Digital Audio, July 28, 2011
I had this recording in my '80 stash of cassette tapes.
Haven't heard it in years, But played it a lot back then.
So I wanted to see what it sounded like now.
My brother digitally remaster it for me.
I didn't really expect much from the reproduction.
It rated "Medium Quality" and acceptable.
Better than some "ripped" CD's I have!
I won't snub an 80's cassette outlasting a CD ever again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as Don't Say No, May 6, 2011
This review is from: Tale of the Tape (Audio CD)
For some reason I waited until last year to finally get this album. I was a fan of Don't Say No the year that it came out. I bought the next album after that and then started to lose interest in Mr. Squier (the video for Rock Me Tonite may have been a reason why, LOL). I had heard that this album was pretty good but I did not realize just how good until I took a chance while looking for something new from the past. It's not quite as solid as DSN, but of the nine songs I think six of them are gems and the other three are not bad. Tale of the Tape is quite a step forward compared to his two albums with Piper in my opinion. I'm very gald to have added this album to my collection.
