This book was given to me for a Christmas present and it is the best I've read! It is very difficult to put it down. Chuck combines each story or quotation with the truth of the Scriptures to create life-changing applications of power and conviction. Hundreds of illustrations are group in alphabetical order that makes it easy to find. I will be sharing it with my studentss, plus using the illustrations in sermons and Bible studies.

This book contains information that touches on many situations of life. I had a hard time putting it down. It is a compilation of poetry, wisdom and history that will not want too miss a single line.

I have found it to be loaded with ice breakers during my Sunday School Class. Whether it be with comedy or emotional, it contains many topics.

I'm not a preacher; I'm a teacher. But I appreciated the illustrations and could easily use some of them in my teaching. I'm not sure what the reviewer was expecting who said it was almost worthless. Swindoll has been captivating audiences of thousands for many years with these very quotes and illustrations. Some have been around for a while, but that's because of their inherent power or poignancy. I think it's a good collection.

I purchased this book about a year ago. It is a collection of short homilies, most about a half to one page in length. Not being a preacher, I had no idea these type of books existed!!!

Anyway, I have found this book to be a helpful source of icebreakers and application discussions for our Small Group. I will often simply photocopy a passage and have one of the members read it. This is a good way to steer the discussion back to every day life application and personal experience, particularly with an exegetical study. I have wound up using it as a source for about 1 out of 3 lessons, so that's pretty good. And I routinely search it for an applicable story.

I am constantly looking for these kind of books, to stimulate a meaningful discussion of scripture. This one has a pretty high percentage of "keepers". Some ice breaker books are a little silly. I would recommend this book for a Small Group Leader's library.

The Tale of the Tardy Oxcart is excellant for preachers and teachers. Just as Jesus used parables to illustrate His sermons, this book provides resources to illustrate Biblical messages or teachings.

I have used it in my message preparation and would recommend it to assist. Pastor Swindoll has years of experience that enriches this work.

This is a collection of stories that Charles Swindoll has put together. It has been a great benefit in my ministry when I have been preaching or just used it for devotional time. I believe that everyone would benefit from reading the stories as they contain a message for real life happenings and trials. I have loved this book and highly recommend it to others. I had a seminary professor who said that if you get one good illustration out of an illustration book, you got your money's worth. Well, I guess I got my money's worth, but I was expecting more. Many of the "illustrations" are quotes from Swindoll's books, and weak quotes at that. And many of the illustrations are simply limp. With as much preaching experience as he has, one would think he could present a better line up than is found here. Maybe he just didn't want to give out his A material. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this book unless you can find it at a rock-bottom price. And even then, you might have paid too much for it.

I love the heartwarming stories in this book. It is a must for every preacher who from time to time struggles with finding good sermon illustrations. Moreover, it is good for any writer or public speaker. It has a place on my bookshelf!

I purchased this book on a whim, and WOW! I haven't been able to put the book down. When I get off work and relax in the evening, I find myself seeking time with this book, because it has so many different topics. It has given me many ideas on topics to do word studies and additional bibically based research on.
