This review is from: The Tale of Time Lost (DVD)
I am a dedicated Ptushko fan. The breadth of this man's imagination is awesome; a puppet/animation master way before the digital special effects revolution. With something to say no less. And ingenious, creative ways of saying it. For the child in all of us his message is of hope and his outlook on life and human nature is gentle and positive. Much of his work is in the realm of European folk and fairy tale. This tale does feature magic and deliciously evil sorcerers but is set in the mid-twentieth century. Basically, these four old evil-doers switch their ages with four young time-wasters. The children have only hours in which to reverse the spell. There are many stories today dealing with shifts in time, of identity switches. But this one was a forerunner. Yes, there is a moral, and it's repeated throughout the movie - and what's wrong with that? It's delivered with wit and humor, the young victims get it in the end, just in time to save their skins! The young hero isn't so bad to start with, just in need of a system check. And in the manner of a true hero, when he reaches the point where he can save himself he turns right around at great risk to find his fellow victims. If you want a movie without gimmicks, to spend an hour or so watching a master of the genre spin a simple, funny and enchanting tale, buy it. You'll like it! Our kids do.
