Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The Brakes are a Philadelphia-based band of twenty-somethings intent on staking a claim to the rich lineage of American rock music. Their debut full-length album, Tale Of Two Cities, on HYENA Records, is a 12-track collection recorded live during a dual city residency in April and May 2007. The band would head up the New Jersey Turnpike every Tuesday to set up shop at The Knitting Factory in New York City, while getting cozy with hometown fans every Thursday at MilkBoy in Philadelphia. Each show was recorded and the best performances from both cities were assembled. On standout versions of songs like Into The Ground, Big Money, Boat Trip, Song Of Imponderables, The Brakes distinguish themselves with equal parts smart indie-pop songwriting and razor sharp musicianship.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time, July 24, 2008
By B. Ackerman (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - See all my reviews

The Brakes have finally achieved something that has not been done in a really long time they have released an album where every song is better than the last. The first time i heard them was at some club in Washington D.C, and after that i was hooked. They had an amazing stage presence and an hour felt like 15 minutes, I cant even remember who the headliner was. They really left me wanting more. Now with a Tale of Two Cities i've got it. It's hard to believe that this is their first album. Something tells me that The Brakes are going to be around for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album, May 27, 2008
"Tale of Two Cities" is an amazing, cohesive album. The up tempo songs like "Big Money" and "Danger Blues" really groove, while slower songs like "Cigarette in the Rain" are gorgeous examples of excellent songwriting. It was recorded live, but the quality is so good that you can barely tell until the audience begins cheering. Perfect for fans of americana/folk rock bands.
