Amazing Album,
This review is from: Tale of Two Cities (Audio CD)
"Tale of Two Cities" is an amazing, cohesive album. The up tempo songs like "Big Money" and "Danger Blues" really groove, while slower songs like "Cigarette in the Rain" are gorgeous examples of excellent songwriting. It was recorded live, but the quality is so good that you can barely tell until the audience begins cheering. Perfect for fans of americana/folk rock bands.

The Brakes have finally achieved something that has not been done in a really long time they have released an album where every song is better than the last. The first time i heard them was at some club in Washington D.C, and after that i was hooked. They had an amazing stage presence and an hour felt like 15 minutes, I cant even remember who the headliner was. They really left me wanting more. Now with a Tale of Two Cities i've got it. It's hard to believe that this is their first album. Something tells me that The Brakes are going to be around for a long time.

I've seen The Brakes perform many times in the Philadelphia area, and even caught one of the shows (selections recorded on album) in New York, where they weren't as well known. Their stage presence belies their ages. These are truly kids, who have been playing and performing together for over seven years. Considering that the oldest player is only 25 years old and the youngest 21, that's a pretty good chunk of their lives. They really know each other, certainly musically, almost psychically. This becomes quickly apparent when watching them perform. It's a little harder to pick up on when just listening, but you do get the sense that they are truly in sync on many different levels.... most of all the music. The music is catchy... it's pop... it's fun... it's serious... it's blues... it's good ole rock'n roll! It's just really good music. I've seen six year old kids at all-ages shows dancing up a storm, and old geezers of 50 and 60 bopping away at their infectious sound as well. What's so great about the CD is the fact that is recorded live, amazingly so, and does catch in many respects, the fun and the vibe of the live show. I'm glad I can still see this band live in smaller venues before the rest of everyone else finds out about them.
