Book Description

It was the best of trails and the worst of trails. Each year, thousands of hikers from around the world make a pilgrimage to the West Coast Trail: a rough and tumble trail along the coast of Vancouver Island lurking with dangers and difficulties, home to hundreds of shipwrecks and rated as one of the most scenic trails in all of North America.

Its sister, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, picks up where the West Coast Trail ends, continuing down the Canadian coast following a popular, well-developed trail through breath-taking scenery.

Ryan Carpenter, intrepid explorer, ventures out with two ridiculous homemade backpacks, a duffel bag and an umbrella to conquer both trails through a rain forest that receives over 10 feet of precipitation each year. Whether trying to outrun a helicopter on foot or searching for bloodthirsty smugglers, it’s a hike that nobody will forget.

Nowadays, Ryan lives in Seattle running Atlas Quest, a popular letterboxing website ( and encouraging backpackers everywhere to ditch their heavy commercial stoves for cheap, lightweight, homemade soda can stoves (

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED GOING ALONG ON THE HIKES!!! November 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Ryan writes in a style that allows the reader to experience his trials and triumphs as though they were along on the hike with him!! Really love his detailed observations of the environment and historical information about the sights along the way, as well as the funny little encounters/challenges that occur each day. Accompanying photos further enhance the feeling that you are there. Easy read - but you may feel exhausted after keeping pace with this veteran hiker!!

4.0 out of 5 stars What an adventure. January 26, 2013

Great read. My arms hurt during his climb and bushwhack up the cliff and off the beach. I could almost smell the salt air and see the mud and mist. Thanks for writing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short story September 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found some of his situations to be comical. Story was short and really didn't get into a real story line.
