Book Description

November 1, 1993
This book chronicles the reality of violence in America, from what today is considered commonplace - muggings, brawls, friendly arguments gone bad - to the far fringes of real-life mayhem - a bombing, a run-in with a satanic cult, a prison rape. By reading these gripping true stories, you can understand how to avoid all types of sudden, random violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't try This At Home, May 18, 2000

This review is from: True Tales Of American Violence (Paperback)
From the author's subway encounter with a thumbsucking knifer to Danny Machuca's late night pursuit of a gunman, this book is an eye-opening exposition of the most persistent thread in American culture: VIOLENCE. Not only do you get to know the people who commit and endure the mayhem, you are also left with the feeling that such things could happen to anyone, anywhere.

This very point was driven home in my own living room, as I cracked open a cheap beer, reclined in my easy chair, and opened this book to page 43 to read Steve Pendleton's story.

As my wife opened the front door to let in our son and his friends a large stray dog followed the kids inside and began fighting with our greyhound! Since I was insured and my dog was not, I stood in for the couch potato, and ended up winning my third dog-fight in front of three horrified children. Even after that I couldn't help but pick up the book again --and the story still sent a chill down my spine.

Highly recommended for self-defense students and students of American culture.
