what's up w/ Jarrett,
By
This review is from: Tales of Another (Audio CD)
This is a great album of atmospheric, moody music. Gary's bass sounds great and he plays well throughout. Jack accents the mood and only really opens up on the last two tracks. I would consider this one of my all time favorites if not for one thing: Keith Jarrett moaning and whining. I can't understand it. His playing is so beautiful and lyrical, all overlaped w/ these strange and annoying noises. I know it is an expression of emotion while playing, but I find it highly destracting. This album, though, is good enough to look past it. Barely.

The musicians performing here are among the best jazz/classical musicians in the world. The performance is world class as you would expect. I love Peacock's moody compositions on this CD rather than the standards this group usually performs. However, all the beauty of this fine jazz is ruined by Jarrett's damn squealing and squawking. On this CD he's particularly obnoxious which is a shame since the material and performance is among the best this group has ever done. It's gotten to the point where I now avoid buying any music with Jarrett. Someone should clue Jarret in.......he's NOT being cute.

Agree,

I agree with other reviewers regarding Jarrett. His noises are irritating and distracting not unlike in his own 1970s live solo effort, "Koln Concert". The sound engineers at ECM need to seriously considering editing these grunts and groans when remastering these discs.

Would be great if not for Jarrett's irritating noises,
This review is from: Tales of Another (Audio CD)
I don't know what you're supposed to call the horrible noises that come out of Jarrett's mouth as he plays. It's not singing, it's not scatting or humming or whistling. Whatever it is, it's off-key, shrill and to me, completely distracting on this particular album. Which is very sad because the music here is superb. Really gorgeous and inspired playing by a group of musicians who are completely in each other's minds.
I'd give this 5 stars if they could find some way to erase Jarrett's bleatings..but as long as they're so audible, I can't give this more than 3 and a half stars.

A crying shame (literally),

This is a good Gary Peacock album, but not a great album generally speaking. After the opening track, the excellent "Vignette", all of the other tracks are buried beneath Keith Jarrett's moaning and screeching. And I don't mean for short periods or occasional intervals, but for LONG stretches of time. Jarrett's vocalizations appear on most of his albums, but this is his only ECM recording that I've heard where it becomes a major distraction. Whenever there is any discussion about this album, EVERYBODY mentions the unintentional histrionics, unless they pre-determine to not mention it out of respect for Jarrett.
It's really too bad that Gary Peacock's performances and compositions are almost forgotten about, because with the exception of the experimental "Tone Field", this would be a great jazz piano trio album. His playing on "Trilogy II" is especially outstanding. Jack DeJohnette plays with his usual brilliance, although from time to time he sounds perplexed by the discordant directions the material sometimes takes. The group's headlong rush to the finish of "Trilogy III" is a true highlight on an album that doesn't provide as many as the all-star line-up might promise. Now that this trio has been performing mostly standards together for almost 30 years, it's a great surprise to hear them play newly-composed material. Be forewarned about Jarrett's singing, however.

Don't await it's being back in stock too eagerly,

I agree very strongly with most of the other reviewers. Jarrett's foolishness really makes this date worthless. Luckily, there is plenty of other DeJohnette and Peacock material available. On this date they certainly gained nothing from Jarrett.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that Jarrett never made a good recording, but his musicianship is highly overrated in general. If you want to hear Peacock with a much greater pianist, listen to his work with Marc Copland, for example. I notice that this CD is not very easy to obtain (Amazon has been out of stock for a while at the time of this writing). It is definitely not worth spending your time and money to locate this one!

Released in 1977.Although this is the solo album of Gary Peacock, you can hear the Keith Jarrett Trio at their best! All songs are written by Gary Peacock, and no more boring old standards songs. You will find out how good Keith Jarrett Trio can do.Hearing this album, one can't help but wondering why KJ Trio waste so many talent in endless standards albums in 80s and 90s.
