Editorial Reviews

Review

"Nobody knows more about its history and the stories behind all the zoom-zoom than David McGee, the award-winning journalist from the Bristol Herald Courier. He is the speedway's senior public address announcer and, according to just about anybody--including the general manager of the speedway--the person with the inside scoop on everything in that world. McGee's new book, Tales of Bristol Motor Speedway is for anybody who likes fast cars." --Knoxville News Sentinel

More About the Author

I live in Bristol, Tenn.
I grew up in Stanton, Ky.
I graduated from Morehead State University.
I work as a newspaper reporter.
I have a special someone named Debbie.
I have a cat named Murphy.
I don't remember a time that auto racing hasn't been important to me.

For someone who never drove race cars competitively, I fell in love with the sport - in nearly all of its forms - at an early age. And that juvenile adoration has evolved into a deep, abiding appreciation for those skillful enough to go fast and those who prepare their chariots.
I decided early if I couldn't afford to race I would cultivate skills that would allow me to observe the sport most closely. With a knack for writing and acquired photography acumen, my journey began as a teenager writing free-lance stories about the colorful exploits of the local heroes at my hometown Kentucky race tracks.
From there the journey led to college - Morehead State University where I had one history class with Super Bowl-winning quarterback and TV announcer Phil Simms - and a journalism degree.
From there, more freelancing and a move to Bristol, Tenn., where two of the world's great altars of speed lie. Amidst the hills that contain Thunder Valley and the former dairy farm where Bristol Motor Speedway now stands, I found my Mecca.
Since 1983, I've had the privilege of being part gluing myself to the regular spectacle that NASCAR racing and professional drag racing bring to my adopted hometown.
My real job is reporting on the news of the day, but my passion - my calling -centers on speed.
My first three books recount the motorsports history of Bristol. Future projects will continue to document racing history and one or two might just wind their way back to my old Kentucky home.
