Book Description

August 15, 2005
Author Don "MUFF" Kamuf takes his readers on a whirlwind tour of his life as a Navy submariner . . . From his experience growing up in the Bronx and going to Catholic schools, Kamuf joins the U.S. Navy and enters submarine school at Groton Connecticut-a decision that determines his course for the rest of his life. He tells of his experiences serving on the USS Bang SS 385, the USS Sea Poacher SS 406, and the USS Abraham Lincoln SSBN 602, which made patrols in the Atlantic Ocean. After leaving the Abraham Lincoln, Kamuf was sent to submarine school to teach others how to "make air." He then served on the USS Dace SSN 607, making many trips around the world. After that, he worked in submarine repair on the USS Fulton AS 11 and as a planner at the Submarine Support Facility in Groton, Connecticut. Retiring from the Navy, Kamuf was hired by General Dynamics Electric Boat as a construction engineer. This lasted almost twenty years until he retired. In the last chapter, Kamuf tells about his struggles as an alcoholic, the pain, and his eventual triumph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Submariner dredges up memories!, November 26, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tales From Da Bronx Submariner (Paperback)
As a former submariner I thoroughly enjoyed the book. When I started reading it I kept telling my wife how much I was enjoying it. She kept saying "You could have written a book like that." I quickly told her that Chief Kamuf did, I didn't and he either had a great memory or kept a log. In any event, I thought the book, and by implication, the author's life was great. It brought back a lot of memories. I was a diesel submarine officer in the late sixties and early seventies and could easily relate to many of the challenges, escapades and frustrations. I chaired a submarine reunion in 1999 and that experience dredged up all sorts of memories and caused me to have dreams and nightmares about my time in the boats. This book had the same effect. It was captivating.

There were a few typos and such but it did not detract from the overall reading experience. It was a great read. Well Done!

Finally, the role drink played in his life, and the life of many submariners, was accurately portrayed. Alcohol ultimately took its toll but you'll have to read the book to get the rest of the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tales from Da Bronx Submariner, March 17, 2006
This review is from: Tales From Da Bronx Submariner (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading Muff's tales but I think he left out some good ones. We crossed paths on and off for over 20 years starting by getting booted from Nuke Scchool at about the same time, then at Sub School and at the Chief's Club. I'm glad somebody put some of this erra in a book.
