Book Description

September 20, 2007 P and upClassic Illustrated
The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are among the most enduring and most beloved of all traditional tales. This beautifully designed collection contains "Cinderella," "Brave Little Tailor," "Snow White," and 12 more. Coupled with antique illustrations by such artists as Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane, and Randolph Caldecott, these retellings are as fresh as springtime and as timeless as "happily ever after."

2.0 out of 5 stars Tales from the Brothers Grimm a great disappointment, October 24, 2009

I was looking forward to receiving this book to read to my 5 year old son every night. As a child I LOVED the Brothers Grimm" Fairy Tales book that I had. I read it so much the hard cover became so worn we had to tape it together. The other reviewers wrote glowingly of this book and I am at a loss as to why they found this to be a great edition of these truly classic tales. Perhaps they never read the unabridged versions. Not only are some of the stories different than I remember(i.e.Hansel and Gretel was drastically changed) and the illustrations are different within each story. Hansel and Gretel appear completely different on each page as do the other characters. My 5 year old kept asking "Who's that?" every time he saw a "new" character(same characters but different illustrations). This made it impossible to keep reading the story to him. Then I picked up Classic Fairy Tales by Scott Gufstason. What an improvement!! If you are looking for a book on these Fairy Tales to read to your young children, THIS IS THE ONE! Please do NOT waste your money on "Tales from the Brother Grimm".

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Fairy Tales, December 26, 2009

We discovered this book at our local library and fell in love at first reading. The collection of illustrations is captivating, the stories are well told, and the feel of the book in our hands is luxurious. When my children and I settle in to read these fairy tales we are swept away to another time and place. Because these are not illustrated by a single artist, we get to have lots of conversations about artistic interpretations and my children are then inspired to draw from their own imaginations rather than copying how they think a fairy tale character "should" look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation!, May 2, 2008

I recently purchased this for my 5 year old and she loves it. The pictures are varied, mostly great old-fashioned paintings, and the stories are the perfect length for a read aloud before bed. The book is small enough to be accessible to kids (not one of those heavy, bulky anthologies) and I know we'll be using this for quite some time.
