Book Description

September 14, 2004
Most American presidents are given, at most, a period of eight years in which to protect a single country. But unknown to the public at large, one rough-riding president took it upon himself to protect the whole known universe - for the entire expanse of time. What do a man who was formerly president and an inventor who was formerly alive get up to when they otain a stolen time machine? Science, that's what. Teddy Roosevelt and the ghost of Thomas Edison travel to the far-flung future on a wager, only to discover the terrible secret of space! It's a rough and tumble tale of science with both fists as our two heroes race through time to liberate the Red Planet from it foreign invaders.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the opening pages of this whimsical graphic novelette, President Theodore Roosevelt hijacks H.G. Wells's time machine and uses it to travel to the year 2000, where he meets the ghost of Thomas Edison. After Edison makes improvements on the time machine so it can journey through space as well, Roosevelt christens the vehicle "The Bully Pulpit." Then the two head to Argentina circa 2008 (depicted as ludicrously scientifically advanced) only to discover that the nation is now ruled by Adolf Hitler's look-alike and purported descendant, Jorge Hitler, who intends to conquer the inhabitants of the planet Mars. Co-creators Cereno and MacDonald continually surprise readers with a succession of fanciful story ideas, parodying the clichés of fantastic fiction. The trompe-l'oeil cover, designed to imitate a badly damaged copy of an old comic, is especially inventive. No attempt is made at serious, realistic characterizations: Roosevelt and Edison are caricatured, iconic prototypes for the archetypal sci-fi action hero and genius scientist. MacDonald's lighthearted, cartoony art even depicts Roosevelt as a stereotypically brawny superhero. Only Cereno's references to Nazi death camps on Mars are out of place amid all this frivolity. The lack of thematic depth prevents the book from being more than an entertaining diversion, but it's an exceedingly smart and funny one.

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun than Chuck E. Cheese on a viagra binge., September 13, 2004
This review is from: Tales From The Bully Pulpit (Paperback)
This book transcends the title of just "comic book". That label does nothing for the sheer wonder that is held within the covers of this incredible creation by writer Benito Cereno and artist Graeme Macdonald.

I can't exactly place the last time I've read a piece of comic lore and had such a good time reading it. I think it also helps that you can tell the creators of this project had just as much fun writing it.

This story documents the travels of the full time adventurer and part time president Teddy Roosevelt and the ghost of Thomas Edison through time and space. In this first (and hopefully not last) installment, we join them on their first adventure as partners, taking on the kin of Adolf Hitler in South America, and then on Mars. I don't want to give away too much, because there's plenty that happens that'll make you question as to what kind of medications the creative team was on when writing it, but I will tell you this...

Abe Lincoln + Dragon Punch = Comedy Gold.

Every turn in this book will have you laughing outloud and wondering where it can go next. Both Benito and Graeme are relative new comers to the comics field, and I don't think they could have made a better entrance. Benito's painstaking dialog (in some parts mixing german and spanish) and plotting, and Graeme's bold cartoonish lines, with a splash of color from one of the most talented colorists in comics today (Ron Riley), deliver an incredible book everyone is sure to enjoy.

So, if you too enjoy adventure, sci-fi, time travel, outerspace, aliens, history, science, and laughing 'till it hurts, definitly pick this book up.

And pick up an extra copy for your neighbor. And one for his kids. And one for your local library....

An enjoyably funny comic about TR fighting Martian Nazis. It's ridiculous, but it's also awesome and there are great lines on every page.
