C-Bo is a rapper whose name I've been hearing for many years, but outside of a few guest appearances and scattered singles, I wasn't really familiar with him, so recently I picked up his most well-known album, 1995's "Tales From the Crypt" used. C-Bo's a West Coast gangsta rapper who never really found national exposure, but kind of like fellow California MCs Spice 1 and Brotha Lynch Hung, had enough of a regional following that he's been able to put out about 15 releases since his debut in 1992. After listening to "Tales From the Crypt" for a while, I can say that the reason C-Bo never quite made it bit like some of his contemporaries is just because he doesn't really stand out. C-Bo's certainly got skill and a pretty nice flow, but his subject matter can be cliched and rarely varies. C-Bo's raps are full of dark gangsta imagery, thick with threats and gun talk. The one song that stands out head and shoulders above the rest is "Groovin' on a Sunday," the one that breaks that mold. But in any event, "Tales From the Crypt" is an album that grew on me. It reflects the great state of 1995 West Coast music, and the raw g-funk sound is one that makes for good late-night listening. With production that remains upbeat with deep bass, it's a dark and well-executed sound. "Tales From the Crypt" doesn't really stand out among the countless West Coast gangsta rap albums of the mid-90s, but it's a solid album that's always good and sometimes great.
After an eight-second intro, the album begins with "Murder That He Writt," a nice first song with some rough production and even rougher lyrics full of gun talk and angry threats. "Free Style" is just okay, because despite a good funky beat, his lines are generic and cliched and never go anywhere. "Hard Core" and "Want to Be a 'G'" both bring some more raw g-funk and threatening verses, and C-Bo's like-minded female protege Marvaless carries "Stompin' in My Steel Toes," her own solo track. "Birds in the Kitchen" is a highlight, where C-Bo profiles a day in his hood over a really nice beat with a nice hook, giving one of his best performances. After the decent "187 Dance" comes by far my favorite track, "Groovin' on a Sunday." This version is a radio edit of the longer mix featured on his debut EP The Autopsy. This song stands out because it's the only one without an angry or threatening theme. Over a gorgeous, chilled-out g-funk backing, C-Bo raps about lounging on a weekend morning, and this song just has some great, soulful vibes. I also like "Who Ride," another hard collabo featuring Snap. "Take It How You Want To" and "Ain't No Sunshine" close the album with two solid collabos. C-Bo gives a pretty good performance on "Tales From the Crypt," making it an album worth owning in my opinion. His subject matter can grow repetitive, and I think that's probably why he never really found national exposure, especially over such a long career. But the funky production and standout songs make this album a keeper. West Coast fans shouldn't consider "Tales From the Crypt" a must have, but I'd recommend it to them.
