4.0 out of 5 stars A dance/ambient remix of Marillion's best Hogarth album, September 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Tales From the Engine Room (Audio CD)
This shouldn't work. Marillions music hardly lends itself to a dance floor remastering. But listen to 'This Strange Engine' remixed and you'll understand why Steve Hogarth himself was moved to tears.

The opening strains of 'Estonia' introduce us to a weird and wonderful world of dark, layered musical tapestries. 'One Fine Day' is lush and nostalgic and even the PL's own 'Face 1004' doesn't sound totally out of place.

Wholly recommended. If you're a Marillion fan or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars A magical album, January 2, 2004

This review is from: Tales From the Engine Room (Audio CD)
Marillion purists (I'm not one of them) supposedly have very mixed and passionate feelings about this album, all I know is when I heard it, it was nothing short of magical. Especially "Estonia". I agree with the other reviewer.

I heard this in the background at a small dinner party at a house deep in the woods of a Thailand island, the only American among a Swede, a German, a Thai, and two Argentineans; the setting only served to enhance the experience among new friends I was never to meet again.

After purchasing this album months later, it had the same magical effect. Then I bought "This Strange Engine" by Marillion, and liked it, but you know how it is when you hear one version of something before hearing another version....

Having said that, this album flopped as a gift for a friend who I thought would love it!

Buy it, it's hard to find!
