I'm not a big fan of reissues and given the previous one (The Wake) included exactly the same tracks as the original album with no remix plus three discs of extras including demos and alternative versions I was more than hesitant about the Tales from the Lush Attic reissue. After a couple of months I decided to purchase a copy and oh god how wrong was I!!!

This is no attempt to make a few extra bucks by rehashing older material, on the contrary, this is as good as it gets. The package is beautiful, completely new artwork which captures the essence of the original release and takes it one step further and lots of interviews and impressions from the 80s by former and current band members plus some impressions from Mike Holmes who was the man behind this reissue.

The album itself sounds completely enhanced and it is such a joy to listen to it in all its glory. All instruments have been remixed (and some even re-recorded) but they still sound faithful to the original spirit of the album. The drums sounds much much better than the original and all the intricacies come across wonderfully proving what a great drummer Paul Cook is. The Bass is also much improved and many arrangements that were not noticeable in the original mix are back and they sound amazing. At times the bass sound is reminiscent of Chris Squire and Geddy Lee and that speaks volumes by itself. Keyboards sound gigantic and more atmospheric than we were used to. Besides there are some riffs and solos that were erased by mistake from the original 1983 mix but are recovered here adding more depth and beauty to the music. Guitars were given the same treatment and they're amazing, too!

I own every CD in their catalog and this group does not know the meaning of "throwaway" or even "mediocre." Every song they have ever composed is exceptionally high quality. Their epic songs are not only grandiose and entirely riveting, but also take the listener's emotions on a magnificent journey. It is impossible to hear songs like The Enemy Smacks, Awake and Nervous, and The Last Human Gateway without getting goosebumps -- particularly the end portions. This new release contains a wealth of material. I can't even do it justice. Here is a link to a professional prog review of it:

The 30th anniversary special edition of 'Tales' is a double disc hard back 32 page book with lots of extras,
The CD features the 2013 remix version of Tales... remixed by Mike Holmes and engineered by Rob Aubrey. All the individual instruments can be heard much clearer than on the original mix of 1983. Especially the Mellotron parts by Martin Orford sound better and warmer and his fine playing on the synthesizers sound brighter than before. In the guitar parts performed by Mike Holmes you'll hear much more details. Unlike the original record Peter Nicholls sounds crisp and clear. All the extra sounds that were included to give the music some additional effects can be heard more in the forefront of the final mix. This can be heard, for instance, in the intro to the opening piece The Last Human

I buy only albums that I listen to them first and if I rate them 5 stars I buy the CD after... This album like others from the band is a must listen too for lovers of progressive rock in the Neo-Prog or Symphonic Prog genre!
