From Chapter 6 "The Chase"
Simon had just about reached the bridge leading into Glarney when he heard a familiar grunting not far behind. He raced to he bridge. The sounds of the Truids were getting louder. Looking behind him, he saw they were getting closer. Suddenly, his foot slipped in some mud and his ankle turned sharply. He stopped in his tracks, doubled over with pain. He could not move a step further.
"Oh no!" he cried. "Now I will never make it back to Glarney!" Simon frantically searched his pockets for the tacks he had been playing with that morning. Grabbing a handful, he threw them on the ground and limped away as fast as his feet would carry him. When he looked behind, his attackers were yelping and jumping up and down, howling with pain. The chase was over, at least for the moment. Simon continued on, half running, half skipping. Unfortunately, he was not watching where he was going and slipped in a muddy patch. Within seconds, he found himself sprawled flat on the ground on all fours. As he struggled to get to his feet, he felt something drag his arm down with tremendous force. He resisted with all his might, but it was no use. Within seconds, he had completely disappeared into the slimy muck.
