5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Traditional Metal Classic
This band, hailing from Sweden, has been doing traditional metal alot longer than there coutrymates Hammerfall. Starting out as a death metal band, they evolved to the classic/power metal band they are today slowly. This album stands as their best to me, seeming to be a mixture of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force and Riot's Thundersteel if it had Uriah Heep's original...

This album stands as their best to me, seeming to be a mixture of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force and Riot's Thundersteel if it had Uriah Heep's original singer Dave Byron. All in all, an AMAZING album, the sweep solos done by their lead guitarist are alot more memorable than Yngwie's and the riffs rule !

5.0 out of 5 stars a short but honest review, March 11, 2006

This review is from: Tales of Mystery & Imagination (Audio CD)
one of my first heavy metal albums since my old university years in Chile. even this is de secon album most of people think is first. This and sacred talisman are the classic and best work of Nocturnal Rites . TO Say simple the voice of Zackrisson made a totally different sound talking about the similar music in heavy metal melodic groups, Guitars and harmonics are constantly shouting and telling to you that this is the real classic heavy metal.
i was very sad when knew Zackrisson left.... Then the band took the tipical progresive way that you find in to many bands today
In my collection this is top ten
hope that it helps you

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY METAL!, October 22, 1999
This review is from: Tales of Mystery & Imagination (Audio CD)
I only received this album yesterday from amazon, and already I have listened to it -in it's entirity - four or five times. This a superb album with great musicianship and songs of true metal. This band remind me of Helloween with a hint of manowar, the singer sounds very much like the singer on Yngwie Malmsteen's 'Facing the animal' , he is one awesome singer and can really hit those high notes well. The guitar work on this album is excellent, as is the drumming, if you like good musicianship then you will appreciate this album. I would reccommend this album to anyone who likes power metal or NWOBHM music, and to metal fans in general. Now I have finished this review I am going to buy their other album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The wision is so close behind!, October 8, 2006

The title of my review is a joke, of course, alluding to the lead singer Ander's thick accent. I took a listen to this album before buying and decided to purchase when I heard the Queen-esque breakdown in Ring of Steel. Now, I find that this album and Sacred Talisman (also by NR) are two of my favorite power metal albums. I will echo other reviews and say that NR's best work by far was with Anders. Each song on these albums is memorable, fun, and catchy. The newer albums are alright at times, but seem cookie-cutter and homogeneous. In my opinion, early NR runs circles around the Hammerfalls and Stratavari of the world.

Nocturnal Rites - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - is one of the first steps in my son music education. Album is melodic and has fast parts, great vocal and very good riffing. With Manowar, Mercyfull Fate and Diamond Head represents a good start before Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Pantera and Sepultura. I recomended this album to every fan of light metal, especially track named 'Pentagram'.

nocturnal rites should be household names. i cant believe the crap music shoved down are throats in the u.s. this music is as catchy as the beatles biggest hits except these areat breakneck speed. a 5 star cd to me is one where there are no bad songs and this is flawless. ive got all metallica, megadeth, priest, maiden and these guys are in that pack. there are no power ballads here just hellicopter like sounds with incredible melodies. anders the lead singer is fantastic. please people make these guys household names.

4.0 out of 5 stars O glorious melody!, August 17, 2000
By
This review is from: Tales of Mystery & Imagination (Audio CD)
As fine an example of melodic "true" metal that one can find anywhere, "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" serves as the classier of the true metal pair, the other of which being HammerFall's "Legacy of Kings." If you want the compelling melodies without the self-parody, spring for Nocturnal Rites over HammerFall.

Favorite songs include "Lost in Time," "The Vision," "Pentagram," "Eye of the Demon," and "The Curse." Basically, all the songs on the album have great choruses, compelling guitar harmonies, and enough heaviness for any power metal fan. The sole complaint I have is about the vocalist, who has a bit of a blues twang. He sounds as if he would be more suited to a classic rock band.

Overall, though, Nocturnal Rites is a highly underrated power/fantasy metal band. If you think HammerFall is good, well, you'll find that Nocturnal Rites is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Deja-Vu, July 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tales of Mystery & Imagination (Audio CD)
When I listen this album for the first time, I thought to myself, God I've already listened this music. That is the impression, this band get me inside, for a few monthes this cd stay in my stereo, It's a simple heavy metal with great melodies and something more that I can't explain. Listen the music called "The Vision", it's perfect since the lyrics to the music. As I said, I don't know what happens to me when I listened this album, I think that was Deja Vu
