Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Pleasant DeSpain's Tales of Tricksters and Tales of Wisdom & Justice .

Gr. 3-5. Each of the tales in these collections appeared originally in DeSpain's newspaper columns in The Seattle Times and was then published in a two-volume set, first entitled Pleasant Journeys (1979). It was then republished as Twenty-Two Splendid Tales to Tell from around the World (1990). Each of the three new books in the Books of Nine Lives series features 9 or 10 folktales collected from diverse cultures, grouped thematically and told succinctly. Nonsense includes such silly selections as "The Turnip" from Russia and "The Silly Farmer" from Ethiopia. Trick sters offers clever stories such as "The Smuggler" from Persia, and Wisdom features satisfying tales such as "Toads and Diamonds" from France and "Senor Coyote, the Judge" from Mexico. The books end with notes on each tale, including storytelling suggestions and sources. Illustrating each selection is an expressive, full-page ink drawing. Carolyn Phelan
