These gaily wicked poems can be compared only to Boccaccio's Decameron or Balzac's Droll Stories. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was serious poet, and although objections have been made to his subject matter, cuckolds, lecherous priests and wanton young ladies, his tales are highly readable.
