4.0 out of 5 stars Genre-Bending Metal, December 9, 2006
This review is from: Tales from Sadness (Audio CD)
Like Mercenary and Into Eternity, Italian metal band Raintime has carved out a unique sound by blending elements of progressive metal and death metal. Sounding like equal parts Dream Theater and Dark Tranquillity, Raintime's debut album Tales from Sadness delivers on many levels. It is as aggressive as it is progressive, and is technical without sacrificing melody. There are also some Labyrinth-style Italian power metal elements in the band's song arrangements, and the interplay between clean and death metal vocal styles keep the listener engaged, while enhancing the mood of the songs.

I enthusiastically recommend this album. I'm a big fan of this kind of genre-bending metal, especially bands like Mercenary, Into Eternity, and now Raintime that are not afraid to add extreme metal elements to technical progressive metal. Tales from Sadness may be a bit too heavy for progressive metal purists and not heavy enough for death metal disciples, but is all but guaranteed to please most open-minded metal fans.

The track listing is as follows:

1. Moot-Lie
2. Faithland
3. Creation
4. the Experiment
5. Denied Recollection
6. Chains of Sadness
7. Using the Light Forever
8. Daily Execution/Paradox Defeat
