Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6. Beautifully illustrated and organized, this collection of 10 folktales concerns the "one aspect of nature that is shared by (all) people...the sky." The themes include the wind, the seasons, colors, and weather, and they are explored through related historical, scientific, and geographic tidbits. In addition, activities and craft suggestions that correspond well with the elementary school curriculum are included. The easy-to-follow directions are clarified by simple illustrations. The stories are nicely retold with clear and descriptive language. Patterned borders based on designs familiar to the cultures from which the tales are taken surround the pages, and the full- and partial-page illustrations are brilliantly colored and appealing. The different elements of the book are brought together through an attractive layout and easy-to-read text type. Useful for teachers and accessible to children, this book would be an excellent addition to any library.?Sabrina L. Fraunfelter, Kings Glen Elementary School, Springfield, VA

Enjoy an ethnic journey through the stars and seasons in a collection of ten global folklores with activities retold by Milord. Story-related activities reinforce astronomical concepts and includes arts and crafts, while the various accounts from India, Mexico, and other countries provide a panorama of folklore and adventure. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Tales of the Shimmering Sky has something for everyone!, February 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Tales of the Shimmering Sky: Ten Global Folktales With Activities (Tales Alive! Series, Vol 2) (Paperback)
This collection of ten folktales from around the world (Native America, Slovakia, India, Europe, Canada, Polynesia, Mexico, Africa, and Scandinavia) focuses on the sky--heavenly bodies, the seasons, and the weather. In addition to Milord's colorful and creative stories, this resource also contains background information, science experiments, hands-on projects, games, arts and craft activities, and recipes. Children are invited to learn about the mysteries of the sky through exciting activities such as baking a batch of celestial pretzels, solving a lunar calendar puzzle, making a Beaufort scale to estimate wind speed, and flying an origami-style paper kite.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of a wonderful series..., November 29, 2004
This review is from: Tales of the Shimmering Sky: Ten Global Folktales With Activities (Tales Alive! Series, Vol 2) (Paperback)
All three Williamson "Tales alive!" books are great but of the three this is my favourite. The stories chosen are delightful and cover a range of sky related themes, eg. the sun, moon, stars, weather. The stories were not always the best known from a region (I noticed this with the Polynesian entry as that's my part of the world), and this was a definite plus for me. The activities are great - I work with slightly older children than the book is aimed at but could easily adapt them to suit.
