Book Description

March 30, 2007
"Tales from the Table" is a practitioner's account of the successes and limitations of using Lovaas/ABA home education with five young boys on the autistic spectrum. The abilities and skills of these children before, during and after intervention are documented with a focus on the realities of undertaking Lovaas/ABA home education: the impact of a 35-hour learning week on both child and parents, changing tutors and issues of commitment to the approach. Each chapter includes a commentary on the programme from a different perspective, with the voices of parents, siblings and teachers providing the context to the individual children's learning processes. This book will help parents to make an informed decision about using Lovaas/ABA interventions and will give professionals and students practical insights and useful information on the approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent in providing context, October 3, 2007

This review is from: Tales from the Table: Lovaas/ABA Intervention With Children on the Autistic Spectrum (Paperback)
Margaret Anderson's Tales from the Table describes several case studies of students diagnosed on the autistic spectrum. These were straight-forward and engaging, and would provide excellent material for discussion of clinical decision-making. What was most interesting, however, was the discussion of context that is so often missing from such work. Discussions of "should we change behavior" and "are we ethically correct when doing what we are doing" were presented in a balanced manner. The viewpoints of parents of children diagnosed on the spectrum, as well as autistic self-advocates, were presented and make for important reading.

I volunteer with autistic kids and found this book very interesting to read about individuals from a different spectrum of ASD.
