Book Description

August 28, 2002
Think about North Carolina basketball and the first name that comes to mind is Dean Smith. Rightfully so. But before college basketball's all-time winningest coach made his impact on the UNC program, the Tar Heels already had a storied history. These stories are told in Tales from the Tar Heel Locker Room, a compilation of the best notes, quotes and anecdotes from North Carolina lore. In these pages, you will meet a coach nicknamed "Bloody Neck", a player called "The Blind Bomber", and a team known as the "White Phantoms." Of course, there is also Bones McKinney, one of basketball's all-time funnymen. With Bones, the Heels laughed all the way to the 1946 NCAA finals. At the end, they cried after losing. Then there is Frank McGwire, whose "Underground Railroad" carried the Tar Heels to an undefeated season and a national title in 1957. And, of course, there is Smith and the extraordinary Michael Jordan, both of whom excelled at the team concept. This is a "must-read" book for college basketball fans of all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good complement to other Tar Heel b-ball books, March 18, 2003

This review is from: Tales from the Tar Heel Locker Room (Hardcover)
The Dean Smith era of Tar Heel basketball has been well documented in other publications, as has the Frank McGuire era to a lesser extent. What I enjoyed about this short book are the stories from the early years (1910-1940's), as I had some brief knowledge of UNC's successes during that time, but did not know of some of the colorful characters and anecdotes from those years. People think winning the ACC b-ball tournament is hard (and it is!) but imagine having to beat five teams in five days to win the Southern Conference tournament! If I have one complaint, it's that some of the facts are repeated in multiple anecdotes (e.g., we don't need to be reminded over and over that George Glamack's vision was impaired). All in all, a nice complement to other books about Tar Heel basketball.
