Good complement to other Tar Heel b-ball books, March 18, 2003
This review is from: Tales from the Tar Heel Locker Room (Hardcover)
The Dean Smith era of Tar Heel basketball has been well documented in other publications, as has the Frank McGuire era to a lesser extent. What I enjoyed about this short book are the stories from the early years (1910-1940's), as I had some brief knowledge of UNC's successes during that time, but did not know of some of the colorful characters and anecdotes from those years. People think winning the ACC b-ball tournament is hard (and it is!) but imagine having to beat five teams in five days to win the Southern Conference tournament! If I have one complaint, it's that some of the facts are repeated in multiple anecdotes (e.g., we don't need to be reminded over and over that George Glamack's vision was impaired). All in all, a nice complement to other books about Tar Heel basketball.
