4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage power metal - reissued, August 1, 2008
This review is from: Tales of Terror (Audio CD)
1985's Tales of Terror was the second album from German cult heavy metal band Stormwitch. Not too far removed from Helloween's pre-Keepers work, Stormwitch's early sound was clearly influenced by Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and the rest of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene. I definitely hear a lot of Angel Witch and Cloven Hoof in particular here.

Tales of Terror is a pretty typical mid-80's power metal album. You have your Priest-inspired twin guitar attack, flashy solos, wailing vocals and fantasy/occult themed lyrics. It's cheesy as hell, but it's also part of what I love about 80's metal. Here in the US, Savage Grace, Ded Engine and Obsession had a similar sound and energy.

If you're a serious heavy metal fan, particularly of the NWOBHM and early `80s power metal scenes, you definitely should look into Stormwitch's catalog, and Tales of Terror is a great starting point.

Edition Notes: Battle Cry Records reissued Tales of Terror in 2005. Not only was this the first official CD release for the album, but they added four bonus live and previously unreleased tracks.
