Product Description

his is the first graphic novel set in The World of Tralodren, a fantasy setting made popular by Chad Corrie's The Divine Gambit Trilogy, which explains the happenings of the cosmos before recorded time. The vast stretch of centuries covered in this tale encompasses the creation of the cosmos, the gods, Tralodren, and everything else in-between. Readers will be hooked from the first page as they're pulled into a rich storyline and universe that entertains as well as educates about the ancient past and foundations of the Tralodroen cosmos. And while this graphic novel ties nicely into the other novels related to The World of Tralodren, it can still be read and enjoyed by those new to the setting. With stunning art by Lee Oaks and a compelling narrative written by Corrie, this is a must-have for anybody who enjoys a good story, mythology, and/or fantasy in general. Welcome to The World of Tralodren, a place rich in history, faith, and tales of adventure of which this story is but one of many.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Midwest Book Review, January 2, 2009
By Chad Corrie (Minnesota, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tales of Tralodren: The Beginning (Paperback)
Written by Chad Corrie, illustrated by Lee Oaks, and featuring cover art by Ed Waysek, "Tales Of Tralodren: The Beginning" is a superbly presented, full-color graphic novel set in the fantasy world setting of Chad Corrie's "Divine Gambit Trilogy" and is the story of events that took place before recorded time. Depicted is a world of magic and mayhem, creation and conflict, tragedy and triumph. Of special note is the choice of a cursive-style font for the text which conjures up an appropriate story-telling atmosphere for a truly engaging saga. "Tales Of Tralodren: The Beginning" is very highly recommended and entertaining reading -- and will leave graphic novel enthusiasts and science fiction fans looking forward to more graphic novel adaptations and original stories set in Chad Corrie's Tralodren universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord of the Rings meets Dune only partially describes this epic tale, December 12, 2007
By Brian Miller (Sunny - Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tales of Tralodren: The Beginning (Paperback)
Tales of Tralodren is a singularly unique experience. The artists have envisioned epic panels and pages. Some of the scenes are so amazing, looking like stills lifted from any of the films from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. No other graphic novel has dared to tell such a sweeping epic adventure in a fully illustrated manner such as this. Graphic novel fans will be blown away by the amount of thought and detail incorporated into each panel and page. The art and color bringing the characters and story to life.

Readers will be blown away by the sheer number of characters and races of creatures in the story. With Tales of Tralodren you will discover many kingdoms on multiple planets, and and entire universe. It is like nothing experienced before and fans will be amazed when they read the scope and scale of this graphic novel. Chad Corrie has created and set-up and entire universe of characters, locations, and creatures as well thought out and as carefully crafted as any Star Wars novel and as colorful as any Tolkien fantasy. I hope this is only the first of many graphic novels based on the foundation established in Tales of Tralodren.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging introduction but a little overkill, July 7, 2009
This review is from: Tales of Tralodren: The Beginning (Paperback)
This is a very engaging setup of the cosmology of the Tralodren "universe." Readers of The Silmarillion will note clear parallels in the plot arc, but well integrated into a thoroughly interesting cosmology. The art is superb as well.

However, it suffers from two main faults:

1) "Show, don't tell" is the first rule of creative writing. This comic is quite consciously a backstory infodump, but even within those parameters, it relies entirely on narration. Converting some of the indirect information into direct dialogue bubbles would have helped immensely.

2) The world-building is overcomplicated. Corrie has clearly been putting this setting together for a while, but some of it is just overkill. Not by a lot, but just enough that it feels like Tolkien's world "Now With 200% MORE!" I mean, Tralodren has dwarves AND halflings AND gnomes. It has not just the traditional five elements but sixteen. There are three separate races of lizard men. In particular, the falls of the Titans and the Dranors (precursors to the humans of Tralodren) were intended to be a thematic parallel, but could have been consolidated into a single race and thus tightened up the plot flow considerably.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this introduction to the Tralodren universe and I'm looking forward to starting on The Adventures of Corwyn anthology.
