4.0 out of 5 stars Despite four stars, still fun reading., June 8, 2006
This review is from: More Tales from the Tribe Dugout (Hardcover)
I wish I could give Russell Schneider five stars on this as I did the first in this series. More Tales from the Tribe Dugout is a good book and brings back a lot of memories about favorite players as well as some many won't be familiar with. As a fan for 70 years I appreciate the approach. Unfortunately, I read this book too soon after the original Tales from the Tribe Dugout as well as Pluto's Our Tribe. Many of the players covered were covered in the first book and when it is a Boudreau or a Feller or a Lemon, etc. that is no problem. There are others covered that I didn't care that much about the first time. Also there was less fun and more griping by players in this second book. I also found that some of the stories were repeats, either from the first book or from Pluto's book, old news. Though I think the use of alphabetical order was a plus, it would have been a nice history if the stories from both books were combined in one volume in sequence. It is a shame that there was not much information that could be collected before the early thirties and there are stories out there. Pluto proved that. I would like to see the author do some deep reserch in the beginnings of the Indians and cover that great championship team of 1920. The author of course tried to base the book on interviews, however he found it necessary to insert information to explain what the person interviewed was talking about. Therefore it wouldn't have hurt to have made this a real history, both oral and researched. Otherwise, please don't try a third one like this. I did enjoy this one, I just felt a bit let down.
