Book Description

April 1, 2010
John Cave Osborne morphed from a carefree bachelor into the father of four in just thirteen months. Most people slowly mature into domesticity, but after marrying a single mom then quickly conceiving triplets, Osborne was hastily grandfathered in out of necessity. His new book, Tales from the Trips How Three Babies Turned Our World Upside-Down, chronicles his experience in a unique if not unexpected voice. Parenting memoirs are typically penned by mothers, not men, especially ones who are scant months removed from full-blown bachelorhood. His relative inexperience, combined with the mayhem that comes along with triplets, produces chaos, panic, and humor. But Osborne will do more than just make his readers laugh. Tales from the Trips contains several thought provoking metaphors which speak as much to the vicissitudes of life as they do the triplet experience. You don t have to have triplets to enjoy this book. All you need is a sense of humor and a heart.

Osborne is a great father and husband. You can read that on every page. His descriptions, insight, and dry approach to all things family make this book a great read. 5.0 out of 5 stars I'd be tripping if I was in his shoes... November 9, 2010
Tales from the Trips is the tale of the Osborne family's journey from first hearing Caroline's news about the pregnancy to the birth of the trips (and ensuing chaos which comes with adding three babies to your life and home), all the way up to the trips learning how to walk. Throughout the book, John's writing and storytelling displays a powerful sense of honesty and sincerity. Through this approach, which I found not only endearing, but also refreshing to see from a dad, John expresses his fears, his sense of humor and an obvious deep-felt love for his family, children and fatherhood.

Although I have no idea how I would handle being in John's shoes, I do know from reading Tales from the Trips what I would need to manage. Whether it's from being a first-time parent at a more "mature" age (something I can relate with), John's outlook and approach to parenting and fatherhood is incredibly admirable. His excellent sense of humor (and his wife Caroline's for that matter as well) is definitely a necessary and vital tool for his parenting "tool belt."

Although I have sent our local parents of multiples group information about how to get their hands on Tales from the Trips, I don't think this book appeals exclusively to parents of multiples or parents in general. Because of who John is as a person and how we get to know him throughout our reading of the book, I look at this book as not only a memoir about parenting, but also a book about manhood in general. I strongly believe that John can not only be admired for his parenting, but also for being the kind of man we can all look up to.

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 out of 5 stars for The Trips! July 28, 2010
I don't often speak in clichés, but simply put? I couldn't put this book down. Tales from the Trips literally made me laugh out loud every few pages. But that's not all it made me do. It also made me cry, and between the laughs, Tales from the Trips delivers several poignant passages with the help of the many spiritual metaphors that weave their way throughout the story.

The writing is excellent--equally as funny as it is thought provoking. You'll fall in love with this family as you ride alongside beside them on the emotional roller coaster that began the day they found out they were expecting triplets. Oh, and you'll flat out love John's wife and how well she deals with this lovable, neurotic author.

This is a wonderful book. It comes with my highest recommendation.
