Instead, corporate decides to scrap the pop station’s format and fire the on-air staff. Before Ben can make sense of it all, he’s pulling up stakes and heading south to assist his wife’s budding career in retail. Used to the local spotlight and hectic pace of morning radio, the former host must now grapple with being a lost and isolated stay-at-home dad. During the humbling transition, Ben reflects on his broadcasting career filled with backstabbing managers, dead-weight co-hosts, lowlife competitors, insane listeners, and unpredictable celebrities. Can Ben come to terms with his new station in life, or will a familiar enemy return to finish him off? These are the shocking stories of radio, remorse and revenge. These are the Tales of a Washed-Up Neverwas!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant April 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Scott Mallory can really write! If you're getting "Tales of a Washed-Up Neverwas" as a $1.99 Kindle download you are getting quite an underpriced entertainment bargain.

From page one the characters are spot-on, vivid, and completely real. If you've ever worked in broadcasting of any sort you'll immediately recognize the situations, people, and reality of it all. And if you've ever even listened to popular radio stations you'll be invited inside to see what's taking place behind the scenes with your favorite radio personalities.

The main character, first-person narrative, has a marvelous, readable voice. He's both likeable and dislikeable, which is tough balance to manage. He's a crude jerk and a good-guy family man. I'm beyond impressed with the character. He's not only real, he's so well written that you will feel like you know him and have lived him. Well done, Scott Mallory.

I don't know anything about the radio stations in the area the story takes place, so I don't know how close or far this story is to real people or places, but in general I think it could be set anywhere and work just as well. Be warned, there is a lot of swearing. The cover art makes it look like it's some sort of horror book, but it's not. It's about life, careers, corporate politics, stupid choices and good ones. It's a mature look at a guy who's really growing up. But that description makes it seem dull and this book is anything but! It's lively, engrossing, and wild. Much recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The legend of Scott Mallory... December 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Scott Mallory has illustrated the harsh realities of the radio industry from back stabbing bosses to on air pranks gone awry. This book will engage you on an emotional level. At times you'll be angry and at other times you'll be laughing your ass off! If you're looking for a book to take you into the world of the local DJ than I highly recommend picking up this book.

Oh this book also has celebrities in it too...and some of them are kind of jerks (gasp!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Tales was hilarious! January 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tales of a Washed-up Neverwas was very funny and painted a plausible picture of the life of the modern shock jock - from colorful and occasionally despicable personalities to edgy stunts to job uncertainty to big changes in the industry. It was highly entertaining, well-written, and very readable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal honesty makes great reading January 14, 2012
By Todd
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is really funny and scathingly truthful! The story gives outsiders a real view of the volatility of the radio business. Having worked in radio myself I can attest to it's authenticity and accurate descriptions. In fact I plan on getting a copy for my son so he knows what's in store if he makes the fatal mistake of following in my footsteps and going into the business himself. A must read for anyone who loves radio or has been jerked around by corporate numbskulls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny book April 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When the radio station that Ben Better works for is bought out by a new company, he (as their morning host) sees it as a grand opportunity. That is until he meets his new boss, Donnie.
Donnie is the kind of boss that we've all had, and hated, at some point in our lives. Instead of seeing his dreams come true, Ben find himself out of the job and restarting his life.

Author Scott Mallory does an amazing job of capturing Donnie's manipulative ways while making his readers laugh at Ben's reaction to Donnie.

If you enjoy a good laugh then you'll enjoy this book.

More About the Author

I'm a 15 year radio vet who spent 8 of those doing mornings at pop station Z-93 (WGTZ-FM) and rock station 103.9 The X (WXEG-FM) in Dayton, Ohio. During my hiatus from the broadcasting world, I spent seven years being a stay-at-home dad and wrote my radio novel "Tales of a Washed-Up Neverwas" and children's book, "Bad-Off Boris and the Cupcake Cave-In." I hope to have my new Boris book, "Better-Off Boris and the P.U. Shoo" out soon. I've recently returned to radio, co-hosting the Scratch and Mallory morning show on Highway 98 Country in beautiful Destin, Florida. When I'm not on the air or scribbling away at the next book, I spend as much time as possible with my son and daughter. One of our favorite past times is watching classic cartoons and films on the family 16mm and Super 8 projectors.
