Also, the paper design would fall off in one wash. It should be printed on or left off.
Some people have complained that its not sized properly for "a stick" - the problem is that the exact dimensions of "a stick" of butter vary depending on where you are in the country.
I take a stick of butter out of the butter keeper in the fridge and shove it in from the top - the excess just peels off to the sides. No problems. Wouldn't work with a very hard or very soft stick of butter, but works fine coming out of my butter keeper in the fridge. You put the pusher in first, then just push it down to the bottom with the stick of butter. I use half a stick because a whole stick is too long.
Works fine when buttering corn as well.
Here's the problem - there are two slots in the top where the lid fits in. The butter keeper is hollow between the part that holds the butter and the outside where you hold it. No matter how you try, bits of butter WILL get down in those cracks. Then there's no way to really clean it out - there are two little tiny holes in the bottom to drain water out - this isn't a straightforward process either. There's just no way to get this thing clean and be sure it's actually clean. Put it in the dishwasher, and it gets hot enough to melt most of that butter out, but it will leave a residue - the holes are much too small to really allow enough water in to really get the thing clean.Read more ›
I'm on the east coast so our sticks of butter fit perfectly (just have to cut them in half, since the butter boy only takes a half of a stick). The opening where the butter comes out is curved so it glides right over the corn cob. As the butter runs low, you just push a small little plunger at the bottom to bring the remaining butter to the top. The outfit design (which is adorable) is printed on (I'm guessing newer models do not have the design as a sticker) and doesn't look like it will wash off and so far the whole device seems easy to clean.
I'm really happy with the butter boy. Adults seem to like it because of the ease of applying butter and I believe it's perfect for kids since they can independently apply their own butter, plus it's cute! but over all it's a handy little device.
