5.0 out of 5 stars From Grandma, With Love
When I moved away from home and then returned to visit my grandmother, I decided it would be a good idea to get her recipes. She would create a feast every Sunday for our family and I wanted to carry on the tradition. Imagine my surprise when she handed me this cookbook and said, "they are all in here." Naturally, Grandma would experiment with the recipes, here and...

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Talisman Italian Cookbook (Hardcover)
I bought this book with high expectations. . . I wanted to consult a cookbook that was written for Italians and was considered authentic. This book was translated several decades ago and "adapted for american kitchens" which means that a lot of the recipes are translated using substitute ingredients that are not authentic. There are a lot more italian cooking ingredients available in grocery stores today than when this book was translated but the revision does not take account of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars the classic Sicilian cookbook, December 31, 2011

Talisman ccok book contains family recipes of the women who ran the kitchens in 19th and 20th century Sicily. The influence of Arabs and Spaniards who invaded Sicily is evident in the recipes whose ingredients seem exotic...but they are authentic. The products always taste wonderful and even novices de cuisine are delighted. So have fun with Talisman.

My mother had this. I got this one as a present. It's got all the 'old-world' recipes. I haven't tried them all, but it's got what I want.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook, January 30, 2010

My daughter is half Italian - her Greatgrandmom used the original, so she has grown up with the food and was thrilled to have the cookbook. A bit surprised that NO pastries were included. We must have 50 Italian pastry recipes from Greatgrandmom, but none of them are in this American version of the book. The book is old - about 50 years old - so in good condition, considering. One chunk of pages came out when unwrapped.

She would create a feast every Sunday for our family and I wanted to carry on the tradition. Imagine my surprise when she handed me this cookbook and said, "they are all in here." Naturally, Grandma would experiment with the recipes, here and there, but the basics are in there just waiting for your personal touch.

Note: These are old world recipes, not what you would expect from a cookbook published today. Be prepared to start from scratch.
