Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Continuing the rewarding collaboration begun on 1995's The Flower of My Secret, composer Alberto Iglesias infuses director Pedro Almodóvar's 2002 meditation on love, obsession, and loss with a score of quiet, sophisticated grace. It ranges from the evocative Spanish guitar, violin, and vocal flourishes of "Hable con Ella" (showcasing contemporary flamenco stars Vincente Amigo and El Pele) and Brazilian vocalist Caetano Veloso's gorgeously spare rendition of the international hit "Cucurrucucu Paloma" to the Latin classicism of Ellis Regina and Tom Jobim's "Por Toda a Minha Vida" and a slate of moody string-driven, autumnal orchestral cues. The eight-minute "El Amante Menguante" for string quartet features compelling, almost playful modern flourishes while tracks like "Trincheras/Decadence" and the tense "A Portagayola" suggest a rewarding Spanish take on Hitchcockian romance and suspense. That it all meshes almost seamlessly with Purcell's closing "The Plaint: O Let Me Weep" is ample testimony to the transnational flavor and ever-subtle mastery Iglesias brings to bear here. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow... where can I find more Caetano Veloso??, February 27, 2003
Hey, I was as surprised as anyone else to see Caetano pop out of nowhere in this creepy-but-classy Pedro Almodovar film... and his version of "Cucurrucucu Paloma" is as charming and transcendent a performance as you could ever ask for. Okay, so now a bunch of people are wondering which Caetano albums to buy that sound similar in tone to that song. Of the top of my head, I'd recommend acoustically-oriented records such as 1975's "Coisa" and "Joia," and particularly the more recent European concert album, "Omaggio A Federico E Guilietta," which features Caetano playing with pretty much the same ensemble as seen in the film, and has the same subtle cultural spendor. It also features avant-pop cellist Jacques Morelenbaum, who has been Caetano's bandleader for the last decade or so. They're certainly all favorites of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Beautiful, November 6, 2002
By M. Dufarge (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This is the best original score I have heard in a while for one of the best movies I have seen recently. The music is haunting, pensive, beautiful, and more, and sets the tone perfectly for the themes and issues in the movie. Caetano Veloso's performance is stunning in the movie, and the song sounds not quite, but almost, as beautiful here without the accompanying visual. Talk To Her evokes a singular tone and feeling for its audience, and now that I have heard the soundtrack on its own, I realize that Almodovar owes much to his composer, Iglesias, in this regard.

4.0 out of 5 stars As compelling and languid as the film....., February 28, 2003

Alberto Iglesias' soundtrack for Pedro Almodovar's "Talk to Her" is as compelling a piece of 21st Century Spanish Classical music and languid sensuality as the film itself. Almodovar has a unique tack on making films, and this one is a visual stunner that is intensely augmented by this beautiful and stirring soundtrack.
The orchestral pieces evoke the dramas, the comedies and the dances of this movie. The ballet of modern dancers, of a woman fighting bulls, of a young dancer practicing her steps as the two protoagonists stumble through their efforts to reach beyond their limits they impose on their lives are all evocatively drawn out in this remarkable music that often reminds me of Revoueltas. And the stunner in the film is Caetano Veloso delivering "Cucurrucucu Paloma" seaside in a Cafe with a brilliantly subtle group of accompaniests. I think this is my favourite 4 minutes of film in all the movies I have ever seen.
There is drama, comedy, and as one might expect with Almodovar, the bizarre. The film is a triumph and the music is just the right ingredient to heighten deepen and accentuate the flavours of this remarkable work. Buy the disc, see the movie. It's great.
