4.0 out of 5 stars One warning..., December 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Talk Java to Me: The Interactive Click, Listen, and Learn Guide to Java Programming (Paperback)
It should be noted that the material, as presented, teaches Java per the JDK 1.02, so it does not cover some newer features of the language and standard classes.

This should not be seen as a condemnation of an otherwise excellent course, just a note that someone finishing this book may want to then move to a JDK 1.1 or 1.2 book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST kind of tutorial short of an actual taught class., December 16, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Talk Java to Me: The Interactive Click, Listen, and Learn Guide to Java Programming (Paperback)
Although I'm only a third of the way through the book at
this time, I feel the word should be spread about this kind
of project. Actually hearing someone speak about and explain
Java is much more beneficial than just an exhaustive guide.
Especially for someone like myself who is self-taught.
This book/cd combo delivers. By tailoring the presentation
in response to two simple questions, the authors have "gone
the extra step" to insure the reader gets what they deserve.
Even though the technical terms are used (which have to be
in order to learn the language) they are presented with
animations pointing out in actual code what they are. The cd
runs smoothly picking up where you last left off after each
lesson you complete. Excercises are provided along with
answers to help drive the info into your memory.

The format of this book is something I hope other publishers
and authors take note of- A supportive cd with more than just
the guts of the book regurgitated, questions/problems WITH
ANSWERS provided and the ability to customize the way in
which information is presented to the reader.

All in all, with an exceptionally low price for a book/cd
combo, this package is well worth the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't imagine who..., April 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Talk Java to Me: The Interactive Click, Listen, and Learn Guide to Java Programming (Paperback)
I can't imagine who could benefit from this. For those who learn well from print, the book offers literally no explanation to support the multi-media presentation. For those who learn well from multi-media, this CD skips so quickly (in a patronizing tone) over complex material that if you don't already know Java, you ain't gonna learn it here. I found "Thinking in Java" to be much, much better.
