4.0 out of 5 stars One warning...
It should be noted that the material, as presented, teaches Java per the JDK 1.02, so it does not cover some newer features of the language and standard classes.

This should not be seen as a condemnation of an otherwise excellent course, just a note that someone finishing this book may want to then move to a JDK 1.1 or 1.2 book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't imagine who...
I can't imagine who could benefit from this. For those who learn well from print, the book offers literally no explanation to support the multi-media presentation. For those who learn well from multi-media, this CD skips so quickly (in a patronizing tone) over complex material that if you don't already know Java, you ain't gonna learn it here. I found "Thinking in...

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST kind of tutorial short of an actual taught class., December 16, 1996

This review is from: Talk Java to Me: The Interactive Click, Listen, and Learn Guide to Java Programming (Paperback)
Although I'm only a third of the way through the book at this time, I feel the word should be spread about this kind of project. Actually hearing someone speak about and explain Java is much more beneficial than just an exhaustive guide. Especially for someone like myself who is self-taught. This book/cd combo delivers. By tailoring the presentation in response to two simple questions, the authors have "gone the extra step" to insure the reader gets what they deserve. Even though the technical terms are used (which have to be in order to learn the language) they are presented with animations pointing out in actual code what they are. The cd runs smoothly picking up where you last left off after each lesson you complete. Excercises are provided along with answers to help drive the info into your memory. The format of this book is something I hope other publishers and authors take note of- A supportive cd with more than just the guts of the book regurgitated, questions/problems WITH ANSWERS provided and the ability to customize the way in which information is presented to the reader. All in all, with an exceptionally low price for a book/cd combo, this package is well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book/CD ROM is a quick and painless way to learn Java, October 12, 1998
This review is from: Talk Java to Me: The Interactive Click, Listen, and Learn Guide to Java Programming (Paperback)
I found this approach very useful. The presentation is concise, up to the point, and makes sense. The only recommendation would be to make the flow more interactive. I would like to be able to get more deatail on certain topics. Also it would be nice to have some volume control on the console. Great tool for a begginer in Java who has some programming experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good beginning book to learn the basics of JAVA!, April 30, 1997

The course is really the CD-ROM. It is an easy to follow multimedia course that can get a beginner going on learning JAVA. Between the price and the easy to follow and fun tutorial, this is definitely a real bargain

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by it's cover!, February 16, 1997

Forget the artwork on the cover... what were they thinking!?!?! I put the book back on the shelf twice. First, because I thought it was a "Macintosh" edition (sorry Mr. Mcintosh). Second time, I thought by the artwork it was hokey bull aimed at my wallet, not my brain. Third times was a charm, I actually open the book to see the exercises. I thought, "what the hell" and bought it. I was totally blown away! This method of education totally expliots mutimedia technologies to their fullest. Each module takes about twenty minutes to complete, so there's no excuse for "dedication of time."

Now Java 7 is out, and Sun is gone, having been swallowed by Oracle, this book is woefully out of date.

But this still has the most phenomenal cover of any programming book ever.

3.0 out of 5 stars how do you learn?, April 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Talk Java to Me: The Interactive Click, Listen, and Learn Guide to Java Programming (Paperback)
Different people learn different ways. Generally, there is visually, audibly and actively. Visual learners learn by seeing examples. Active learners learn by doing lots of action, even if it's walking in place while a teacher is talking.

This book is geared toward people who learn by hearing more than anything else. The people on the CD talk and you listen and follow along on screen.

I gave this book such a low score because I am very independant from my ears. I learn probably 85% visually, and the talking didn't help me all that much. Other than that, it was a good book and I would recommend it to anyone with a good set of ears!
