This review is from: Talk Matters: Refocusing the Language of Public Schooling (Paperback)
This book is not just essential reading for educators but for anyone who deals with other people on an interpersonal level. Dr. Fennimore describes in vivid and intriguing detail, using actual incidents, how our speech shapes our actions. Dr. Fennimore discusses how educators in oral and written communications categorize children and then treat them as if they are categories rather than individuals. She proposes logical ethical standards, mainly related to language and decency, for educators to follow which if implemented could greatly improve our school systems and the quality of education, especially for those students in less advantaged school districts. She also makes numerous school reform suggestions related to language which could be implemented immediately and without the need for substantial expenditures. This is one of the most important books on the interplay between language and action ever written and at a minimum should be read by every educator before he or she ever enters a classroom.
