Good Soul Music,

This review is from: Talk to Me - Music from the Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This is a great soundtrack to listen after watching the movie. However, there were several songs that were played in the movie which is not on this particular soundtrack, which is disappointing, ie. Sly and the Family Stone and Sam Cooke. I hope when the movie is out on DVD, perhaps they will product a 2nd original sountrack. Also, in the movie, the original version of Les McCann "Compared to What" is played, but a mixed version is on the soundtrack. That is a classic song and I feel it should have been on this CD.

Sam Cook? Hello?,

The entire film hinges on the song "Change Is Gonna Come," by the great Sam Cook, yet it does not appear on this release? Come on now.

Decent soundtrack, but missing a couple of songs...,

Decent soundtrack - would have been a GREAT soundtrack if it had included Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" or the original version of "Compared to What" like another reviewer noted (probably due to licensing issues). Still mostly good songs & worth the price but if your heart is set on the incredible Sam Cooke song, get the "Portrait of A Legend" CD also.

Sorry I didn't take the time to check each song listed before the purchase. I enjoyed the movie so much I felt the CD would represent the songs I heard. Not one hit I was looking for was on the CD. A waste of money!

What a great movie! I had never heard of it before but I saw it on a transatlantic plane flight. Great acting and amazing soundtrack! Also they nailed the look and feel of the late 60's and 70's in a very convincing way, never seeming trite or Hollywood-ish. I loved it. Bought the soundtrack too. One of the best films I've seen all year, deserves more attention.

Talk To Me,
This review is from: Talk to Me - Music from the Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I loved it. This is a movie from my teen years, and I remember the time in history very well. As a Washingtonian, I was here for all the drama. The movie misses the mark on some of the relationships, but I know that was just Hollywood license. I loved it!

While the tracks of this movie, which was terrific by the way, are excellent slices of the 1960s/70s R&B scene (especially the Memphis soul sound), there was one fatal flaw, as is usually the case in any historic reproduction.
The original Les McCann/Eddie Harris number, "Compared to What," was not availabel in 1967 when the song was played in the time frame of the film. It was not recorded until 1969 and not released until that year. The album is "Swiss Movement" and available on Rhino Records, as well as Atlantic Records' giant multi-disc Rhythm and Blues compilation. Its use was appropriate for dramatic effect but its timing was wrong. |
