Editorial Reviews

Stunningly repackaged, remastered, and featuring new liner notes by leading jazz writers, the Warner Jazz Masters Series includes best sellers as well as rare, sought-after gems. "Talk To The People" preaches earthily in the funky soul/jazz and R&B languages of the time. Having gone completely over to the Rhodes electric piano and Hohner clavinet, McCann became a fervent convert, indeed, he and Stevie Wonder were the funky-butt champs of the clavinet in the 1970s, and he could beat on them with the rhythmic snap of a conga drummer. `Shamading' may be the funkiest, hip-shaking thing Les has ever recorded; the cool, swaggering funkathon `North Carolina' runs a close second; and the best of the vocals is a gritty rendition of Marvin Gaye's `What's Going On'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Les can talk to the people July 20, 2006

This album brings jazzy hip movements to your soul and relays the message of communication of it times. Vocals are good but the sounds that come from his electric keyboard are awesome. He talks to his listeners......

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, she was there December 4, 2010
Format:MP3 Music
'"She's Here" was the theme music for WKTK-FM, *the* cool "album-oriented rock" station in Baltimore in the early 1970's. Hearing it again transports me back to many hazy late nights...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sincere and lusty funky soul. It's got it all! August 10, 2014

The opening bars tell you straightaway you are being taken to funky town. Goosebumps! A reeeeaaally slow version of What's Going On is getting you going. "Some loving here today" - you know the rest.
Gorgeous Fender Rhodes (I love that sound that is unavailable today, unfortunately). Great singing. Great backing up, very loose, very funky, laid-back, dammit! The whining guitar in the background...
I can go on forever. This is a very soulful record. I am completely unaware of political, social and emotional vectors of this work. I simply enjoy a record that's hauntingly beautiful and pleasurable to hear, again and again.
(Am I allowed to suggest this WGO might possibly, eventually, even be better than the original?)
Cool record for people who like their funk soul funky and earnest.
