Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Alberts covers all the fundamentals of miming in this generously illustrated primer geared to high-school theater students. Through easy step-by-step instructions starting with controlled movement of hands and face, students learn how to create the various mime illustrations (walking, running, pulling a rope) and work their way to more complex miming effects: creating imaginary objects, believable characterizations, and successful original material. Alberts includes plenty of exercises to stretch the student actors and teach them control. Most helpfully, Alberts begins the book with a fascinating "Brief History of Mime" that charts the evolution of mime from it roots in ancient Greece through Roman comedy and later commedia dell'arte to its development as a modern art form in the 1920s and 1930s by Etienne Decroux and its popularization by Decroux's most famous student, Marcel Marceau. The history alone makes the book an invaluable addition to the theater library. Jack Helbig
