Most helpfully, Alberts begins the book with a fascinating "Brief History of Mime" that charts the evolution of mime from it roots in ancient Greece through Roman comedy and later commedia dell'arte to its development as a modern art form in the 1920s and 1930s by Etienne Decroux and its popularization by Decroux's most famous student, Marcel Marceau.
