Format: Hardcover
Often compounding the physical and psychological trauma of a sexual assault is the subsequent reaction towards the victim by law enforcement authorities, spouses, friends, and even family. That's why "Talking About Sexual Assault: Society's Response to Survivors" by Sarah E. Ullman (Professor of Criminology, Law and Justice, University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois) is such a critically important contribution. Informed and informative, "Talking About Sexual Assault" addresses how assaulted women reveal their experience, how people respond when informed by these women, the factors influences those responses, and the effect these responses have on the assaulted women. Of special note is that "Talking About Sexual Assault" includes the social context of rape and the implications for response drawn from broader social norms and attitudes about sexual assaults. Perspectives are drawn from survivors of sexual assaults, as well as their family, friends and intimate partners, as well as providers of support including therapists, advocates, and others. Concluding with recommendations for further research, treatment options, and interventions, "Talking About Sexual Assault" is very strongly recommended for professional, academic, and community library reference collections, and should be considered mandatory reading and study for anyone charged with the responsibility of working with a victim of sexual assault, including social workers, counselors, police, health care workers, advocates, policy makers, and researchers in the field.
